Braslovče combines a preserved market-town layout with cultural history and routes in the surrounding area. In the town, the story stretches from market rights granted in the 14th century to the Dan hmeljarjev hop festival. At Lake Braslovško, a forest educational and walking trail, fishing and nature-based recreation take centre stage. During your stay, you can choose between local history, outdoor activities and other nearby offerings.

Market History and the Hop Festival

In 1360, Counts Herman I and Viljem Celjski granted Braslovče market rights. The historic market-town layout of Trg Braslovče has been preserved to this day. Legant is an important site in the town’s history: the building served as an administrative building from at least the second half of the 14th century, and the market judge was based there. An inscription preserved above the entrance suggests that Legant once also had a guard and military function.

The parish church of Marije Vnebovzete is considered the oldest building in Braslovče. Today, a tower and part of the wall remain. Veronika Deseniška, the second wife of Count Friderik II Celjski, was temporarily buried at the church in 1428. The lapidarium at the Braslovče cemetery preserves old gravestones of cultural and historical value; it is a cultural monument and a tourist attraction.

Skup’n plac also brings together community life and cultural heritage. Today, the square serves as a venue for events, intergenerational workshops, meetings, private celebrations and other gatherings. One of Slovenia’s largest and oldest kozolci stands there. The square is also home to one of six VIT information points of the Ecomuseum of Hop-Growing and Brewing, based in Žalec.

Dan hmeljarjev is a traditional Slovenian hop festival held every year in Braslovče on the second weekend of August. At the 2026 festival, a procession passed through Trg Braslovče on its way to the festival grounds. If you want to pair a visit to the market town with a recurring festival, the second weekend of August is the time to plan for.

At Lake Braslovško and on the Routes

Lake Braslovško is nearby, close to Trg Braslovče. A forest educational and walking trail of about 1.5 kilometres runs around the lake. Fishing and nature-based recreation are also available there. Cycling Route No. 16 starts at Lake Braslovško and passes through Braslovče. This gives you a choice of routes in the area: a walking and educational trail by the lake or a cycling route that passes through the town.

Another route is the Veronika Deseniška Trail, which leads from Grad Žovnek, past Lake Žovneško, through Trg Braslovče and on to the Church of Marije Vnebovzete. Grad Žovnek is one of Slovenia’s oldest castles. A regional source from 2017 puts the walk to Grad Žovnek at about 15 minutes and rates it as moderately strenuous. Check trail conditions before your trip.
