The Apolonija Trail is around 15 kilometres long. It starts in Gornja Radgona and invites you to discover the municipality’s natural and cultural heritage. You can use it as a hiking or cycling route. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.
Trails along the Mura and through the landscape
The town trail along the Mura starts at the Most prijateljstva (Bridge of Friendship) on the border with Austria. The paved trail is equipped with benches, children’s playgrounds, an amphitheatre for events and information boards. If you plan to visit, check the latest information about the trail and its facilities beforehand.
A guided tour of Gornja Radgona takes you from the old town hospital, past Aleja velikih and Spominski park Nikoli veÄŤ, and the statue of the herbalist Apolonija, to Most prijateljstva. As the tour may change, it is advisable to check the latest information about the tour beforehand.
The Trstenjak Trail starts at the international border crossing in Gornja Radgona, passes through Negova and reaches Janžev Vrh amid vineyards and wine cellars. These routes offer different kinds of experiences: the Apolonija Trail combines hiking or cycling with the municipality’s natural and cultural heritage, while the Trstenjak Trail includes Negova and the wine-growing landscape around Janžev Vrh among its stops.
Lake, park and nature trails
Pot med jezeri comprises three varied walking trails suitable for all generations. They offer a way to explore Negova Landscape Park, with its diverse flora and fauna. Along the route, numerous mineral springs and mofettes are among the landscape’s distinctive features.
Negova Lake is an artificial lake covering 11.3 hectares, created by combining three castle ponds. It has been protected as a landscape park since 1967. The rare water caltrop (Trapa natans) and the white water lily (Nymphaea alba) grow here. The lake’s origins, protected status and plant life each offer a different perspective on the landscape.
Lisjakova struga Forest Park also invites visitors to observe nature: its educational trail highlights the flora and fauna of a unique habitat along the Mura. Those interested in such habitats as well as hiking trails will find another way to connect with nature in the municipality’s offerings.
Museums, castles and architectural heritage
The permanent exhibition in the former Radgona Hospital is titled “Bridges of Radgona”. In the Špital Museum, works by Styrian painters and sculptors from the 18th and 19th centuries are displayed in the Renaissance hall. The collection includes archaeological, ethnological, artistic and other cultural-historical objects, documents and records from places in western Styrian Pomurje, or related to the history of this region and the people who lived there from prehistoric times to the present day.
Radgonski grad Castle is first mentioned in the 12th century. The Negova Castle complex is a cultural monument of national importance and includes a herb garden rich in species. The interior of New Negova Castle can be visited independently from April to November. Check the latest visitor information before your visit. Another trace of the former fortifications is preserved in Smodniški stolp, also known as the Powder Tower: it is a significant surviving monument from these fortifications.
Dajnko’s birth house is one of the few surviving and restored examples of a traditional Pannonian house with a thatched roof. Inside, it preserves an ethnological collection of old tools, an original living area with a table and bench, a tiled stove and a black kitchen. The house thus connects its exterior architectural style with specific insights into the furnishings and everyday objects preserved there.
Wine culture and local traditions
The Radgonske gorice cellar tour includes three distinctive wine cellars in the Radgona region: Under the Rock, Under the Roman Wheel and Under the Waterfall. The offering includes Golden Radgona sparkling wine and still wine. At Hiša penin Frangež, sparkling wines are presented alongside homemade specialities, anecdotes, information and the story of how they are made. The “Untouched by Light” experience offers a striking contrast: the sparkling wine of the same name is served in complete darkness.
The traditional Leopold Market is also part of the local character. It has been held since 1700 and attracts participants from near and far every year. The market showcases traditional local crafts, Prlekija cuisine, and products made by craftspeople and entrepreneurs. It brings together handicrafts, regional cuisine and goods from local producers.
