At the Castra site, fourteen towers line an almost continuous Roman defensive wall. It offers a striking gateway to Ajdovščina’s history; at the same time, a hiking trail leads from Predmeja on the edge of the Gora Plateau to views over the Vipava Valley, the Karst and two gulfs. Roman Traces in Ajdovščina and Hrušica

At Castra, the fortress complex can be explored through more than just its wall and fourteen towers. The experience “Secrets of the Roman Fortress Castra” also brings its baths and remains of an underfloor heating system to light. It offers the option of exploring independently or taking a guided tour, combining interpretation, storytelling and interactive elements. The experience was announced in April 2026; check its availability before your visit.

Another Roman site is Ad Pirum near Hrušica: the fortress lies at an elevation of 858 metres on the Roman road between Aquileia (Oglej) and Emona (Ljubljana). The Archaeological Park includes a small exhibition in the Stara pošta inn in Hrušica. You can visit the park independently at any time; check access conditions before travelling. Castra features an almost continuous wall with towers, while Ad Pirum, a fortress on a Roman road, tells a different chapter of Roman history.

Hiking, Rock Openings and Views

The Pot po robu hiking trail runs from Predmeja to Col along the edge of the Gora Plateau. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the Vipava Valley, the Karst, the Gulf of Trieste and the Gulf of Piran. There is a large gravel parking lot at the trailhead by the Materi Gorjanki monument in Predmeja. If you plan to start there, check current parking conditions before setting off. Predmeja is also a starting point for hiking and cycling trips.

Individual rock formations also offer a closer look at the landscape. Otliško okno is a natural bridge formed by a strong tectonic fault. The rock opening is 12 metres high and 7 metres wide at its widest point; weathering and the erosion of the rock contributed to its formation. On Predmeja, Bošnarjevo brezno is considered the most easily accessible cave for visitors in the area. It has three entrances and a natural bridge over a wide chasm. Cave access conditions may vary. For a different kind of activity, the Kovk paragliding take-off site is 860 metres above sea level.

Art, Collections and Historic Sites

The Pilon Gallery’s permanent exhibition features paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by Veno Pilon. Temporary exhibitions also focus on fine art, design, architecture and photography. The Ajdovščina Museum Collection displays around 1,200 fossils from across Slovenia. The Church of St John the Baptist in Ajdovščina offers another art-historical highlight: it preserves 18th-century frescoes and a Stations of the Cross by Anton Cebej.

At Tabor nad Črničami, the northeastern one of the two former defensive towers and the northern one of the two fortified entrances have survived. These remaining structures offer another example of historic fortifications alongside the Roman sites. Each place has a distinct focus: an almost continuous wall at Castra, a fortress on a Roman road near Hrušica, and surviving towers and entrances at Tabor nad Črničami.

Vipavski Križ: Monastery, Wine and Events

Vipavski Križ is a historic cultural site in Slovenia, surrounded by a town wall. The Capuchin monastery houses a library with numerous manuscripts, unique book editions and outstanding works of art. Visitors can tour the monastery by prior arrangement. Wine tastings at Grajska klet also require advance arrangements: Vinoteka Vipavski Križ offers guided tastings. The castle’s renovated wine cellar also hosts cultural and social events.

Another taste of local offerings comes from the independent craft brewery Pivovarna Pelicon. It brews unfiltered and unpasteurised beers, which visitors can buy and sample in its own shop; the selection may change. The Rally Vipavska dolina also takes place in the Ajdovščina and Vipava area. Its format includes a night-time super special stage in the centre of Ajdovščina; dates and programme vary.
