The Trebnje Gallery of Naïve Artists offers a glimpse into self-taught art with an international reach: its collection includes works by more than 320 artists from 50 countries. The gallery regularly organizes exhibitions, lectures, discussions and presentations. Alongside the collection, it offers a variety of events that explore art from different perspectives. If you want to make culture the focus of your trip, this is a tangible place to start.

Landscape and trails at your own pace

Vineyards and vineyard cottages shape the gently rolling landscape along the Temenica and near the forests. Zaplaški hrib offers a different view of the landscape: the pilgrimage church of Matere božje na Zaplazu stands atop the 544-meter hill above Čatež. From there, the views stretch far into the distance. Vineyards and wooded slopes define the scenery, while the church combines this prominent hilltop setting with a pilgrimage destination.

The Zaplaške stezice offer a choice of two route lengths: the shorter route is 1 kilometer long, and the longer one is 3 kilometers. You can choose according to the distance you prefer. The Baragova pohodna pot offers a different scale: this 18-kilometer circular hiking trail starts and ends in Trebnje and passes through Mala vas, Knežja vas, Dobrnič, Grmada and Vrhtrebnje. Most of the route runs through woodland and meadows. Comparing the routes makes the contrast between the short Zaplaške stezice trails and the longer circular route immediately clear.

Cultural stories in houses and collections

Jurjeva domačija dates back to the mid-18th century and has been a cultural and ethnological monument of local importance since 2000. The estate includes a partly stone, partly wooden dwelling house with a traditional black kitchen. The interior furnishings are well preserved, and Jurjeva domačija is also an open-air museum. The combination of construction, kitchen and furnishings gives the farmstead its distinctive architectural character.

With its size and design, Baragova domačija resembles a small manor house and marks the birthplace of the missionary Friderik Irenej Baraga. The upper floor of the preserved building houses a memorial exhibition dedicated to his life, spread across several rooms. Together, the two farmsteads offer distinct cultural highlights: the well-preserved interior of Jurjeva domačija and the biographical exhibition at Baragova domačija.
