Sevnica brings together castle culture, archaeological heritage and trails through forests and countryside. Sevnica Castle dates back to the 13th century and houses museum and gallery collections, as well as permanent and temporary exhibitions. On guided tours, you can visit the Baroque Salon, a collection about Ajdovski Gradec, and the inside of the tower, with its fresco of the Four Seasons. A traditional castle festival is also part of the summer; dates and programme vary. Check the current cultural programme and tour details before your visit.
Castle and Archaeological Heritage
Ajdovski Gradec offers a glimpse into another era: the late antique and early Christian settlement dates from the 5th and 6th centuries AD. Its surviving and preserved remains form an archaeological park. From a marked car park, you can reach Ajdovski Gradec along a maintained forest path in about 15 minutes, with a moderate incline. The walking time is approximate; trail conditions and access may change seasonally. Check conditions before setting out.
A themed circular trail around the castle also combines nature and cultural interpretation. “Forest is Culture” is an 800-metre circular trail that introduces visitors to more than 36 tree species and passes through a gallery forest protected as a natural monument. This offers different ways to explore: guided tours in the castle focus on its collections and architectural history, while the trail highlights tree species and the protected forest.
Trails through Landscape and History
Lisca is a 948-metre-high viewpoint offering views of the Sava Valley, accessible by both easier and more challenging trails. Paragliding and climbing are among the activities available there; in winter, sledding is also an option. Which activities are suitable depends on the weather and season. The range of trails offers a practical guide for planning: Lisca has routes described as ranging from easier to more challenging, but this does not mean they all have the same level of difficulty.
For cyclists, the Sevnica Sausage is a 100.9-kilometre circular cycling route along the municipal boundaries of Sevnica. It is divided into a northern and a southern section. The northern section runs along the left bank of the Sava and through the Sevnična Valley; the southern section follows the right bank of the Sava and passes through the Mirna Valley. Check the distance and surface conditions before setting out. Information about the two sections helps you understand the route by its course, without prescribing a particular stage or pace for the ride.
Pot cerkva also links several themed circular trails: it starts at the Church of St Stephen in Vranje nad Sevnico and comprises three circular routes. Together, they lead through the area between the Savinja, Sava and Sotla rivers to 100 churches and a total of 25 sites, including castles, castle ruins, manor houses, chapels and mountain peaks. The Trail of Peasant Revolt offers a different historical focus. It runs from Sevnica to Bistrica ob Sotli and follows the tracks of a peasant revolt led by Ilija Gregorić.
Wine, Beer and Local Traditions
Wine takes centre stage at the Festival modre frankinje, whose competition has a long-standing tradition. Winemakers from Blaufränkisch-growing regions take part, and internationally recognised experts judge the wines. Dates and the programme may vary, so check the latest information if you are planning your visit around the festival.
Beer is also among the local products described here. APE Brewery makes unfiltered and unpasteurised ales. The Društvo salamarjev Sevnica association also preserves and shares the tradition of salami-making, which has been maintained for decades. Together, these showcase different aspects of regional production, from a competition centred on a grape variety to beer-making and a long-standing sausage-making tradition.
