Seven year-round springs, 25 bridges and a Baroque mansion give you several concrete reasons to stay in Vipava. The town is home to Europe’s only delta-shaped river spring area; it also has historic buildings and activities related to winemaking. A four-hour guided tour takes in several cultural sites. Vipava is also a starting point for numerous hiking and cycling routes.
Springs, Waterways and Bridges
The Vipava springs comprise seven year-round springs and are protected as a natural monument. Over the centuries, 25 bridges have been built in Vipava across its many springs and waterways. The springs and bridges bring together two aspects of the waterscape: the protected springs and the crossings over the water built over time.
Buildings Bearing the Imprint of Different Eras
The Lanthieri Mansion was built around 1659 by Anton V. Lanthieri. Inside, paintings preserve scenes from ancient mythology and fables. The building date and painted scenes offer two distinct historical perspectives: a 17th-century building and the stories depicted in its paintings.
The Parish Church of St. Stephen dates from 1460 to 1465. Its presbytery is entirely covered with frescoes dating from 1737–1738 and 1876–1877. This makes it easy to distinguish the church’s date from the two later periods represented by the frescoes. Visitors interested in historic buildings will find different dates here: one for the church and two for the frescoes in the presbytery.
Winemaking in the Mansion and as an Experience
The Vipava Wine Museum is located in the vaulted cellar of the Baroque Lanthieri Mansion. Its collections cover vine propagation, viticulture and winemaking—from tending the vine to making wine. Check museum access before your trip.
Lanthierijev hram offers wine tastings featuring four or six wine samples. As booking conditions may change, check them in advance. On the “Winemaker for a Day” experience, you follow the winemaking process from vine to bottle. This includes instruction in creating your own wine blend and the equipment needed to make your own bottle of wine. Confirm the booking details before your trip.
Guided Tours and Activities
The four-hour guided tour of Vipava includes the Lanthieri Mansion, Tabor Castle and the Old Bridge, the Vipava springs, Pavao Rušto Square, two Egyptian sarcophagi, the Church of St. Stephen and the Old Castle. Advance booking is required, and local guides lead the tour. Allow four hours in your day’s itinerary and book in advance. Check the latest booking details before your trip.
Hiking and cycling are another way to explore Vipava; the town is a starting point for numerous routes of this kind. Unlike the guided tour, which has a set duration and itinerary, these activities can be a focus of your trip in their own right. When choosing what to do, you can therefore distinguish between a set of cultural stops and outdoor activities in the surrounding area.
Plan Your Journey
Vipava has daily connections with Ljubljana, Nova Gorica and other towns in Slovenia. Check the latest timetable before travelling. Together with booking the guided tour and checking the booking conditions for the wine experiences, these are practical points to include in your plans in advance.
