Fourteen chapels of the Stations of the Cross lead in Gradišče pri Vipavi to the Church of the Holy Cross; above the village are climbing crags and a starting point for hikes to Nanos. Religious heritage, outdoor activities and a long winemaking tradition offer you different reasons to visit. When planning, you can choose from these interests: local history, climbing and hiking, or wine and regional cuisine.
The Stations of the Cross and Local History
The Church of the Holy Cross stands in the centre of Gradišče pri Vipavi, on a hill northeast of Vipava. It is surrounded by the wall of a former cemetery. Fourteen chapels depicting the Stations of the Cross lead to the church; they were built between 1877 and 1881. The number of stations and their destination give this route a clear structure.
The art history route “Po poteh umetnostne zgodovine” also includes a visit to the village and its chapels of the Stations of the Cross. Advance booking is required for the guided tour of the same name, which is led by local guides. Take the advance booking requirement into account when planning.
At Zatrep, above Gradišče pri Vipavi, is a prehistoric settlement dating from the Hallstatt period. It is another historic landmark alongside the church and chapels.
Climbing and Hiking
The rock faces of Gradiška Tura are home to an area for sport climbing, with 196 routes. The starting point for the Gradiška Tura (Ferata)–Abram route is at a large car park by Kamp Tura above the village. The steep ascent on this route is secured with 77 iron rungs and 120 metres of steel cable. These details about the route and its safety equipment give you specific points to consider when exploring this climbing area.
For a different perspective on the surroundings, the climb to the summit of Plaz takes about an hour. From the summit, there are sweeping views across the Vipava Valley. Gradišče pri Vipavi is also one of the starting points for a hike to Nanos. These destinations differ in their stated duration and point of reference: an approximate ascent time is given for Plaz, while Gradišče pri Vipavi is described as one of several starting points for hikes to Nanos.
The Tura Sports and Recreation Centre has two artificial-turf tennis courts, a four-lane bocce court, a beach volleyball court, a basketball court, a handball court, a small-sided football pitch, children’s playgrounds and an artificial climbing wall. The facilities range from ball sports and bocce to climbing; the wall is a different kind of climbing option from the routes on the rock faces of Gradiška Tura.
Wine and Regional Cuisine
The Poljšak family estate in Gradišče pri Vipavi has been growing grapevines for more than two centuries. Vina Poljšak offers guided wine tastings for individuals and groups of up to 30 people. A cellar tour is included; a guided tour of the vineyards can be added on request.
Osmica Ferjančič takes place twice a year: usually in November around St Martin’s Day and in spring, in April or May. Check the announced dates for your specific travel days. The offering includes homemade wine, apple juice and natural mineral water, as well as homemade sausages and cured ham, homemade cheese in olive oil and home-baked bread. The selection is complemented by a stew typical of the region, a farmer’s platter, walnut štruklji and apple strudel. When choosing when to visit, you can therefore distinguish between a guided wine tasting and the seasonal Osmica event.
