Predmeja lies on the Gora, a high karst plateau in the Trnovski gozd between Čaven and Nanos. For hikers, the village is a good starting point for the ascent of Mali Golak: at 1,495 metres, it is the highest peak in the Municipality of Ajdovščina. Other trails lead through the landscape or focus on its sights. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Predmeja, you can choose your destination based on your interests: peaks, scenic routes, karst formations or places of remembrance.
Hiking Trails and Summit Destinations
The “Pot po Robu” hiking trail is an easy route from Predmeja to Col. It follows rocky ridges and meadows along the edge of the Gora, offering views over the Vipava Valley and the Karst, as well as the Gulf of Trieste and the Gulf of Piran. The trail starts at the Mother Gorjanka monument in Predmeja. There is a large gravel parking area there; check local parking conditions before setting out.
Another option is the marked themed trail “Pot po Dolu gor in dol”, which features descriptions of notable sights. The starting point for the “Na Čaven po Srednječavenski poti” trail is in a parking area between the quarry and the tunnels on the Lokavec–Predmeja road. The trails have different focuses: the “Pot po Robu” highlights the route, terrain and views; the themed trail focuses on the sights described along it; and Mali Golak is a summit destination.
Karst Landscape and Activities
Below the edge of the Gora lies the well-known Skukova voda spring. People still visit it for its water, which is believed to have healing properties. If you plan to visit, check the conditions and access locally.
Bošnarjevo brezno in Predmeja is considered the most easily accessible cave for visitors. It has three entrances and a natural bridge over its wide opening. If you plan to visit the cave, check access locally beforehand. The well-known edge of the Gora, the Rob, is part of a landscape park. The Gora can also be circled by mountain bike.
Memorial Sites in Predmeja
A memorial to JoĹľef Ressel stands beside the forestry lodge. Another monument in Predmeja, created by Marko PogaÄŤnik, is dedicated to water and is considered the only monument in Slovenia devoted to this subject. The two memorials have different focuses: one commemorates JoĹľef Ressel, while the other puts water at its centre.
A burial site commemorates 367 fallen fighters from partisan units. The Mother Gorjanka monument is also connected with the history of the Gora: local residents erected it in 2001 to mark the 400th anniversary of the settlement. It also marks the starting point of the “Pot po Robu” trail—a memorial site that is also an important landmark for finding the route.
Access and Trailheads
The access road to Predmeja passes through tunnels hewn by hand from the rock. Together with the different hiking destinations and memorial sites, this gives your stay a clear focus: you can explore Predmeja through its peaks and trails, karst formations or history without having to combine these themes into a fixed itinerary.
