Kamnje on the slopes of Čaven
Kamnje lies on the slopes of Čaven and is not visible from the valley. If you want to combine nature and culture during your stay, you can focus on two things: the trail to Mala Gora and the village’s historical landmarks. This lets you explore both a route through the landscape and the history of the place.
Trails to Mala Gora
The marked trail to Mala Gora starts in Kamnje, passes the cemetery, and crosses a stone bridge. On the return route from Mala Gora, the trail passes Školj sv. Pavla, where you can see remains of walls and a Roman-era water tower. The hike thus links the route with a named historical landmark along the way back.
Another way to explore the area is the Trail of the Mowers and Harvesters. It leads from Kamnje to Mala Gora and recalls the hard work of farming. By linking the route with the history of agricultural work, the trail offers a different focus from simply heading for a destination.
The traditional hike from Kamnje to Mala Gora has taken place every Easter Monday since 1998. Polenta is prepared for the occasion and enriched with Košenina or sour milk. The event provides a clear date around which to plan your trip; if you would like to make the hike the occasion for your visit, check the date for the relevant year.
Village History and Rural Architecture
Kamnje was once a typical farming village in the Vipava Valley. Its architectural features included lanes (“gase”), covered walkways (“ganki”), colonnades (“kolone”), and vaulted storage cellars (“velbani hrami”). These terms refer to different areas and functions: lanes and covered walkways are part of the village’s circulation, colonnades describe an architectural form, and the vaulted cellars were used for storage. Together, they encompass both routes and passageways and the practical spaces of village life in the past.
A permanent exhibition about mowing the high-altitude meadows on Mala Gora is housed in the former school. The exhibition and the themed trail have different emphases: the exhibition focuses on a specific activity, mowing, while the trail recalls the hard work of farming. Rural work is thus explored both through meadow mowing and through the route to Mala Gora.
Church, Art, and Written Records
The origins of the church in Kamnje date back to the 8th or 9th century. The new Church of St. Michael was built in the 16th century. It houses Tominč’s painting “Mary with Jesus,” dating from 1855. The dates highlight different periods: early ecclesiastical origins are followed by an early modern church building and a 19th-century work of art.
The rectory in Kamnje also houses Grohar’s painting “The Holy Family.” The Kamenje Manuscript dates from the 16th century and is written in the Glagolitic script. The paintings and manuscript complement the building history with other cultural records: the paintings are identified by artist and title, while the manuscript is described by its date and script.
