Underground and on two wheels
Belianska Cave lies in the Belianske Tatras National Nature Reserve within Tatra National Park. Its visitor route is 1,370 metres long and includes 860 steps. A nature trail leads from Tatranská Kotlina to the cave; it measures 1,000 metres, climbs 122 metres in elevation and takes about 25 minutes uphill. For planning, it is worth considering these two figures separately: the longer distance describes the route inside the cave, while the shorter one is the approach.
In Tatra National Park, hiking is possible on hiking and nature trails outside built-up areas. The park’s current visitor rules determine access. This lets you combine a visit to the cave with considering which trails outside built-up areas might suit you, while keeping the rules of the protected area in mind.
The Popradská cycling route offers another way to get outdoors: it is 25.4 kilometres long, flat, comfortable and paved. This easy route is suitable for road and trekking bikes, families with children and recreational cyclists. You can access it directly from Poprad city centre or from the car park by a Tesco supermarket. Its length, surface and the two access points mentioned here give you concrete reference points for assessing this cycling route.
Šoldov: Settlement Traces and Route
The remains of the lost medieval settlement of Šoldov lie on the edge of the village of Štrba in the foothills of the Tatras. Partly reconstructed settlement buildings, a monument, an information board and a small seating area define the site. Here, the historical traces are more than just a name on a map: the reconstructed buildings and information board give the visit a tangible connection to the settlement that once stood here.
An 18-kilometre route runs from Štrbské Pleso railway station via Tatranská Štrba and Tatranský Lieskovec to Šoldov and back. For planning, this description also gives the starting point, the sequence of places along the route and the total distance. You can therefore assess the route using these details without confusing it with the 1,000-metre nature trail to Belianska Cave: these are two different route descriptions, each with its own length and course.
Museums: From Archaeology to Everyday Culture
The Podtatranské Museum in Poprad displays a preserved wooden chamber, the sarcophagus and grave goods of a Germanic prince from around the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries AD. The focus is on an archaeological ensemble and its individual components. Another museum exhibition, “Meštianske bývanie,” presents a bourgeois study furnished with pieces from the early 20th century.
The exhibition on traditional crafts offers a different way to explore history: it features guild vessels, guild emblems, documents, seals and guild chests from numerous trades. These objects show the different ways in which crafts and guilds can be experienced—from vessels and emblems to documents and chests. Together with the study and the archaeological chamber, they allow you to tailor a museum visit to different interests, without suggesting that all the exhibitions cover the same topic.
Múzeum Ždiarsky dom has a permanent exhibition featuring interiors, traditional costumes and work tools. As part of its educational programme, visitors can also experience a Ždiar wedding, try on traditional costumes, take a carriage ride through Ždiar and the surrounding area, taste local specialities and listen to Goral music. Check with the museum before your visit to find out which of these activities are available.
Water Attractions and Winter Sports
The Mayská pyramída at AquaCity Poprad has three stainless-steel pools, slides and numerous water attractions. These include a wild water river, a water mushroom, a water hedgehog and water spouts. The different features give the water area a variety of distinct forms; check which attractions are currently available before your visit.
BACHLEDKA Ski & Sun in Ždiar offers up to 10.8 kilometres of ski slopes of varying difficulty. The cross-country ski trails cover 20 kilometres; what is available may vary by season, and operating information can change over time. If you are planning winter sports, check the current conditions in advance. The slope distance is given as a maximum, while the trails offer a separate, season-dependent guide.
