Poludnica rises above Závažná Poruba. From the 1,549-metre mountain, views stretch across the Liptov Basin (Liptovská kotlina). Outside the built-up area, the municipality’s cadastral territory covers 1,856 hectares and lies within the Nízke Tatry National Park (NAPANT), where nature protection levels range from 1 to 5. The landscape, marked hiking trails and sports activities offer different ways to shape your stay.
Poludnica and Marked Trails
The marked hiking trails in Závažná Poruba are part of NAPANT. One option is the Stopy predkov na Veratíne nature trail: this easy circular route is about 4.6 kilometres long and starts at the car park below Ski Opalisko. With children, the circuit takes approximately two to three hours. It leads to Celtic fortifications on the 882-metre-high Veratín, which stood there more than 2,000 years ago. Five information boards explain the history of the site as well as local fauna and flora. The trail thus combines archaeological traces with nature topics. Route details may change if the signage is updated; check the current markings before setting out.
Literature and Building History
A literature museum is housed in the home where the poet Milan Rúfus and his sister Oľga grew up. It displays the poet’s first manuscripts, portraits, photographs and a selection of his thoughts. Alongside the nature and Celtic history themes of the trail, the museum offers an introduction to literature and Rúfus’s work.
The building of Základná škola Milana Rúfusa, the former Evangelical elementary school, was built in 1865, extended upwards in 1911 and expanded in 1967. Its associated bell tower dates from 1911, is 42 metres high and was built in the Neo-Romanesque-Gothic style. The ECAV church in Závažná Poruba was built in 1933 in the Neo-Gothic style. When comparing the architecture, it is worth distinguishing between the styles: the bell tower and church are classified differently.
