Two hikes make the choice in Nižná Boca clear: the Zlatnica educational trail leads into the area’s mining history and culture; the hike to Rovná hoľa combines a marked trail with views of the Tatras. Trail length, duration, and elevation gain give you a basis for fitting the outings into your stay.
Hiking trails with different profiles
The Zlatnica educational trail runs between Nižná Boca and Vyšná Boca. It is 8 km long, has 11 information panels, and takes about three hours. Its subject matter is the area’s mining history and culture. The trail is accessible year-round and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Its route passes through Pod Oleškovou, V Kiari, V Kúte, Geplovô, Ochimstál, and Pri mlyne. After significant weather events, you should check the trail conditions; the route and trail information may change because of maintenance work or detours.
The hike to Rovná hoľa starts in Nižná Boca. It is 15.8 km long, takes about four and a half hours, and involves 872 m of ascent. The yellow-marked trail reaches a spring in the saddle of the Črchľa valley. From Rovná hoľa, views extend in all directions, particularly towards the Western Tatras and the High Tatras; visibility depends on the weather. The stated durations differ by about an hour and a half, making Zlatnica the shorter of the two hikes. The route and trail distances may change because of detours or altered trail conditions. Markings and water availability may vary seasonally.
Natural setting and architectural history
The municipal area of Nižná Boca lies in the Low Tatras National Park. Nižná Boca is also among the cadastral areas of the Nízke Tatry Natura 2000 site. Part of the village is designated as a protected folk architecture conservation area.
Miners’ log houses from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in Nižná Boca. Their through-passage and shingle-covered hip roofs are characteristic of this building style. The oldest surviving house dates from 1710, bears house number 130, and is locally known as Od Jakobusky.
The Evangelical church was built in 1844; its Neo-Romanesque tower was added in 1939. Inside, it has a three-sided wooden gallery and a flat plank ceiling decorated with a painted mining emblem and depictions of miners. The church is considered well preserved and is still used for its intended purpose. As its use may change, check locally for the current status before visiting.
Meadow farming is also part of the valley’s historical heritage. A system of meadow management is considered rare across the territory of present-day Slovakia; a unique system of meadow barns was typical of the Bocka valley. Former mining in the Bocas included around 100 adits and spoil heaps, as well as numerous prospecting trenches, pits, cave-ins, and mining paths, and was significant to the valley.
