Kremenia, two nature trails with different focuses and the village’s history give a trip to Horné Pršany a clear focus. You can explore the distinctive rock formations, visit an observation tower or learn about nature and local history. The excursions you plan can also help you assess whether Horné Pršany might be a suitable place to stay overnight on your trip.
Kremenia: rock formations and caves
Kremenia is a protected natural monument in Horné Pršany, significant for its geological and geomorphological value. The area features diverse surface formations and outcrops where processes of silicification can be observed. These include striking, prominent rock ridges, often with rock cliffs along their edges; smaller rock towers occur in some places. The landforms are associated with the transformation of the original limestone and dolomite rocks into siliceous rock. This also makes Kremenia interesting to visitors who want to focus not only on the trail but also on the landscape’s features. There are also caves within the natural monument.
The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” nature trail ends at the natural monument. From the bus stop in Horné Pršany, marked tourist signs lead to Kremenia Cave; the walk from the village is listed as taking about 20 minutes. These two details refer to different starting points. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the directions from the bus stop and the approximate journey time from the village.
Two nature trails, different focuses
The “Horné Pršany – Rozhľadňa” nature trail ends at the Kopanice locality, below the summit of Lažtek Hill. An observation tower there offers views of the surrounding area. Four stops provide information about the village’s historical and natural features and those of its surroundings; they also cover tourist opportunities in this part of the Kremnica Mountains. The trail thus combines a specific viewpoint with information about the village and its surroundings.
The “Horné Pršany – Kremenia” nature trail also has four stops, but focuses on the history of Horné Pršany and its sights. Both trails therefore have a similar number of stops, but different endpoints and themes: one centers on Lažtek, the views, and natural and historical features, while the other focuses on Kremenia and local history. Marked hiking trails also lead from Horné Pršany to destinations in the Kremnica Mountains, including Tri kríže and Králiky; some may continue as far as Kremnica. The nature trail towards Kremenia and these longer hiking routes are different ways to explore the area.
Local history and traditional customs
Horné Pršany’s historic landmarks include the bell tower. It houses a late Baroque bell dating from 1757, whose maker is unknown; it is listed as a cultural monument. The Hrádok locality offers a different glimpse into the past: a settlement of the Lusatian Urnfield culture was discovered there. From Horné Pršany, you can reach the Medzihrádky (Hrádok) locality via a dirt road that passes the sheepfold. Archaeological investigations were carried out there in the past.
Fašiangy (the pre-Lenten carnival) is also part of the village’s traditional history. A historical account describes it as beginning around midday on Sunday with five men in traditional costume and ending at midnight on Tuesday with the burial of the double bass. At the documented celebrations, the song “Šikovný čardáš” was played. It has no lyrics; according to the account, it was not played anywhere else in Slovakia. These descriptions refer to a historical practice, not to a current event date.
Getting there and seasonal activities
Horné Pršany is a terminus village and can be reached by bus from Radvaň-Kráľová, a district of Banská Bystrica, via Pršianska terasa. Check the timetable before setting off. In winter, groomed cross-country ski trails run along the marked hiking trail network. The “Trasa L – Králiky – Horné Pršany” cross-country ski route also ends above the village. Cyclists can consider the connecting cycling route between Malachov and Horné Pršany. Alongside the nature trails, seasonal and other options can therefore be part of your trip planning, although not all activities are of the same kind.
If you are considering Horné Pršany as a place to stay, you can base your choice on the excursions that matter most to you: Kremenia’s rock formations, the views from Lažtek, local history or seasonal activities.
