A reconstructed Renaissance manor house, hiking stages and cycling routes give Vlkanová a varied character. Natural attractions nearby can also be a focus of your stay. Two questions can help you plan: Which route would you like to take, and should your visit focus more on the town’s history or on outdoor activities?

Getting there and finding your way

Vlkanová is connected to a first-class road by a third-class road at the junction near Badín. The electrified Zvolen–Banská Bystrica railway line also links the town to the rest of Slovakia. These connections provide two reference points for planning your journey; check specific timetables and connections for your travel dates.

History and architecture in the town

Among the surviving cultural monuments is a reconstructed Renaissance manor house dating from the 17th century. Its loopholes have been preserved. The building originally served as a watch post during Ottoman incursions. The historian and literary critic Alexander Matuška was also born in the manor house. The architecture therefore connects two distinct aspects of the past: the building’s former function and a well-known figure from Vlkanová.

A small branch church in the town was built by local residents through their own efforts. Its single-nave interior has a massive portal in a fully glazed entrance wall. The small branch church and the manor house differ in their architecture.

Hiking: stages and short trails

The eighth stage of the Barborská cesta leads from Zvolen to Vlkanová and is 23.5 kilometres long. The ninth stage starts at Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová and follows marked hiking trails towards Banská Bystrica, passing Kozlinec and Vartovka Observatory, among other places. This stage is considered easy to moderately challenging. These details help you compare directions and difficulty, but they are not equivalent distance measurements. Markings and trail conditions can change; check the latest route information before setting out.

The Badínsky prales nature trail is nearby and is listed for Badín and Vlkanová. It is one kilometre long, takes about an hour, has two stops and is considered easy. Its approximate duration is a useful planning guide alongside the short distance. Check the details with the relevant administration before your hike.

Nature nearby

The Badínsky prales National Nature Reserve is in Badín, near Vlkanová. Covering 30.03 hectares, it protects original climax forest communities of the beech zone in the Kremnica Mountains. All three basic developmental phases of European primeval forests are found in the reserve. Access is subject to a clear restriction: to protect the area, entry is permitted only as part of an excursion with staff from the Poľana Protected Landscape Area administration. If you would like to visit the reserve, plan to join such an excursion.

Cycling and planning your stay

The 21-kilometre FAMILY TRAIL between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen reaches Vlkanová via blue cycle route No. 2565 and a forest track along the railway line. The route is flat and suitable for families with children as well as recreational and Sunday cyclists. Another option is the Vlkanová–Hronsek cycle route: it starts in the centre and runs mostly on unpaved surfaces. The cycling options described therefore differ both in length and in the terrain specified.

Fort Geronimo in Vlkanová is a campsite on the Hron River for canoeists and other river travellers; drinks and food are available by the river. As availability may change, check before your visit. The starting points for your planned activities may also help you choose a holiday apartment: the cycle route to Hronsek starts in the centre, while the ninth stage of the Barborská cesta starts at Fort Geronimo. Compare the location of the accommodation you are considering with your plans and check the current route.
