Brusno can be explored from two perspectives: as a spa town with a long history and as a starting point for cultural and nature experiences. The first spa house was completed in 1837; the first season at Kúpele Brusno began in spring 1838. Thus, the first season followed construction the next spring. Topics to explore during a stay include not only the history of the spa, but also the park, historic buildings, the local cultural festival and trails in the surrounding mountain landscapes.
Spa Park and Architectural History
Brusno Spa Park is designated a cultural monument. Its features include centuries-old lime trees, yews, spruces, poplars and chestnut trees, as well as small ponds and a fountain. The variety of tree species and water features give the grounds their distinctive layout. Alongside the history of the spa town, the landscaped park itself is another subject to explore.
The religious buildings also tell the story of different periods of construction. The Neo-Gothic Chapel of St. Anne was built in 1910 on the site of an older chapel dating from 1853. A church in Brusno, originally Gothic, was built in the 15th century; in 1744 and 1766, it was enlarged and given new vaulting in the Baroque style. Its history therefore combines Gothic origins with two later Baroque alterations. Together with the chapel, it offers another historical perspective alongside the development of the spa town.
Čipkárskô: Festival and Local Cuisine
The annual local cultural festival Čipkárskô brings together folk cuisine, crafts and markets. Teams of four compete in an associated contest; they must prepare the dish Čipkárskô in Mašinas. The dish’s tradition is linked to Brusno’s ancestors, who cooked in a “Mašina” while travelling to markets to trade lace. The dish thus connects local food culture with the history of the lace trade. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the year in question.
Hiking, Cycling and Trails
There are numerous hiking trails around the municipality of Brusno leading to the attractive ridges of the Low Tatras and the Poľana Massif. Brusno is also a starting point for summer hiking, cycling and winter hiking, particularly towards the recreational areas of the Vepor Mountains. Each season offers different options: hiking and cycling are mentioned for summer, with winter hiking as a separate possibility. You can plan your travel dates according to which of these activities is most important to you.
A well-maintained promenade leads from the spa facilities to the Skala viewpoint. The Brusno–Strelníky–Šalková route is also named as a cycling option; it starts in the market square of the spa municipality of Brusno. Conditions on this cycling route may change, so check them before setting out. Brusno railway station is in the town centre. If you are travelling by train, check the timetable for your travel date.
