Poniky can be explored through two very different themes: karst landscape and folk culture. To the west of the village lies the Ponický Karst, which covers approximately four square kilometres; sinkholes and blind valleys are among the karst features in and around Poniky. There are also historic buildings, traditional music and a designated educational trail. You can explore nature, local history and cultural traditions as separate themes, without forcing them into a fixed itinerary.

Karst, Forest and Trails

The Ponický Karst is a specific point of reference for anyone interested in karst formations. Its approximate area of four square kilometres and the sinkholes and blind valleys in and around Poniky give the landscape a clear connection to the village. Sessile oak is particularly prevalent in the challenging terrain of the NPR Ponická dúbrava National Nature Reserve. Poniky is also considered an important mushroom-picking area. Mushroom picking is seasonal. Check local access conditions before picking mushrooms.

For a hike, the Hradisko educational trail offers a clearly defined time frame: the self-guided loop is 2.3 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and takes approximately one and a half hours. It is accessible on foot year-round and can be walked in either direction. Its length, difficulty and approximate duration can help you plan it as a separate activity; check trail information locally before setting out.

The green cycling route 5558 offers a different kind of route. It runs from Ponická Huta via Poniky to Šalková. While Hradisko is described as a walking loop, the cycling route connects these three places. The information makes clear the difference between a local hike and a longer cycling connection, without requiring you to combine the two into a single circuit.

Folk Culture Through Exhibitions and Music

The Ponický dom houses a permanent exhibition on the folklore and cultural history of Poniky. The same building also contains an authentic exhibition about the writer and poet Štefan Žáry. This brings together a broad perspective on local cultural history and a dedicated look at a literary figure.

Folk culture is also part of life beyond the exhibitions: many customs have been preserved to this day and are presented by the Poničan folk ensemble and a children’s folk ensemble. If you would like to plan your visit around a performance, check the current programme in advance. The production of home textiles also has a long tradition in Poniky.

Traditional instruments are also specifically identified: the fujara and six-holed shepherd’s flutes have been preserved in the Poniky area to this day. The fujara is decorated with engravings and burned-in ornaments. Together with the customs and ensembles, these instruments form a distinct cultural theme alongside the exhibitions at the Ponický dom.

Church and Event Dates

A notable historic building is the Evangelical church in Poniky. It dates from 1784 and has a Toleration tower dating from 1868. The two dates refer to different parts of the building: the church and the later-dated tower.

Events include the “Ponickými kiarmi” uphill cycling race. It was held for the tenth time on 13 September 2025; the municipality announced the 11th edition for 2026. The “Zdola ponickýho mlyna” children’s folklore festival was held for the 28th time on 13 June 2026. If event dates are important for your trip, check the plans in advance.
