When choosing Nikinci as a place to stay, two cultural themes come to the fore: church history and archaeology. A third point of interest is the 2025 Gastro Fest. Churches and archaeological sites lead back to different historical periods, while the festival is tied to a specific event date. When looking for a holiday apartment in Nikinci, you can therefore consider whether church history, archaeological traces or local cultural events are the deciding factor.

Churches and Religious History

The Catholic parish in Nikinci began operating as an independent parish in 1795. The first parish church was dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. A second wooden church was built between 1800 and 1802; a new church dedicated to the same saint was built in 1972 and completed in 1973. This means several building phases from different centuries stand side by side. The term “patronage” refers to the dedication of a church to a saint: Saint Anthony connects the first parish church with the later Church of Saint Anthony.

The Church of the Ascension is located at 64 Vojvode Mišića Street and has been under construction since 1992. The celebration in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua is a pilgrimage day in June, also attended by pilgrims from other places. Alongside the building history, there is therefore a specific religious occasion. If you are interested in the pilgrimage, you can take June into account when planning your trip.

Archaeological Sites and Finds

The focus of the archaeological themes shifts from church buildings to types of finds, their dating and the landscape. The “Tiganj” site lies southeast of Nikinci on a small rise and covers 1,000 m²; its surface finds date from the Roman period. “Grob cigla” is considerably larger, at 7,500 m², and is a Late Antique necropolis, or burial site from that period. The two sites therefore differ both in size and in their archaeological classification.

Swords, a skull and about twenty skeletons were found at the “Ovsiste” site. The Živolić archaeological site lies on the southern shore of the Vranj marshland. While specific finds are the focus at Ovsiste, Živolić is defined by its location by the wetland. These different emphases give those interested in culture several perspectives on archaeology.

Gastro Fest and Travel

The second “Gastro Fest” took place on 13 September 2025 in the courtyard of the parish of Saint Anthony of Padua. More than ten teams competed in a goulash cooking competition. The event was organised by the HKD “Dr. Nikola Dogan” from Hrtkovci. This culinary competition thus adds to the religious and archaeological themes of a stay.

The events mentioned take place at different times: the pilgrimage day falls in June, while the second Gastro Fest took place on 13 September 2025. A religious celebration and a cooking competition can therefore be considered as distinct cultural points of interest.

In April 2025, Nikinci railway station on the Šabac–Ruma railway line was in operation. Before travelling, check whether passenger services are currently available and whether they suit your travel date.
