Surduk offers several distinct travel interests: the Danube and loess landscape, archaeological sites and wine. The “Horizont Swimming & Spa” complex adds another destination on the riverbank; confirm its operating details before your trip.

Danube Riverbank and Loess Landscape

Surduk developed along Dunavska ulica. The road follows a dry loess valley that slopes down towards the Danube riverbed. Two distinct landscape features help with orientation: the course of the valley along the road and the high riverbank at the Marina archaeological site. This lies on a section of the Danube bank that is continually undercut by the river.

Gradina near Surduk is also situated on a high loess bank of the Danube, by the present-day village. A memorial obelisk stands on Gradina, overlooking the opposite bank of the Danube and the Banat plain. The landscape and monument are connected here, while the Gradina (Rittium) archaeological site also has its own historical dimension.

Archaeological Sites and Monuments

The Marina archaeological site is a multi-layered settlement dating from the Eneolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Its chronology thus spans three periods. Gradina (Rittium) near Surduk represents a different composition: the site includes a fortification, a settlement and a necropolis. Čolićev Čot, in turn, is a settlement beside a fortification. Finds recorded above ground there include Roman building rubble, daub, glass, bones and fragments of Roman pottery. The three sites therefore differ in whether the emphasis is on their chronology, the components of a site or the specific categories of finds.

Surduk’s historical picture also includes memorial sites. The Spomenik NOB-u (Svetionik) was erected in 1961 and is designated immovable cultural heritage in the “place of significance” category. During the Second World War, partisans met at Marinkovićev salaš in the Surduk area; the Podunavski partizanski odred partisan unit was formed there. A monument erected in 1981 stands at the salaš. Alongside archaeology, these sites offer a distinct way to explore the history of the 20th century.

Wine at Vinarija Milanović

The restaurant at Vinarija Milanović is surrounded by a vineyard at a viewpoint above the Danube. Its menu is based on sharing dishes paired with wines from the winery’s cellar. Only Milanović wines, homemade juices and local rakija are served. You can arrange a visit for a wine tasting.

The Slankamenka wine tour follows the Danube riverbank past Slankamen and Surduk and leads to Vinarija Milanović in Surduk. At the stop, wines made from Neoplanta, Frankovka, Probus and Sila grapes are tasted. The tour itinerary and availability must be arranged in advance. This distinguishes it from a separately arranged wine-tasting visit: the tour follows a defined route along the Danube riverbank and includes a named stop in Surduk.

Planning Activities

The “Horizont Swimming & Spa” complex is located in Surduk on the banks of the Danube and has five swimming pools. If you are planning to visit, confirm its operating details before your trip. This distinguishes the wine experiences, which require advance arrangements, and the complex, whose operations need to be confirmed separately, from the archaeological and heritage-related attractions.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Surduk, you can choose your focus accordingly: the archaeological sites and monuments provide a cultural and historical context for your stay, while Vinarija Milanović and the wine tour offer specific wine experiences that require advance arrangements. The Danube riverbank and the course of the loess valley complement these themes with the landscape.
