Kremna combines mountain scenery with several cultural and historical themes: the former caravanserai, the monuments on the plateau and the prophetic tradition. When choosing places to visit, you can start by deciding whether to focus on the landscape, the history of the monuments or the heritage railway. These highlights offer different perspectives on the town.
A Mountain Town Between Zlatibor and Tara
Kremna is a mountain town in a basin of the same name, separating the Zlatibor and Tara mountains. Its hamlets lie at elevations of 750 to 850 metres above sea level. The landscape includes flower meadows, mountain slopes covered with conifers, clear springs and mountain streams. Open meadows, wooded slopes and waterways give the town a distinctive connection to the landscape alongside its cultural monuments. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kremna was declared a health resort—another chapter in its local history.
Caravanserai and Cultural Monuments
Kremna was once an important caravan station on the road towards Bosnia and Montenegro. The Stari Han, also known as Moljković Han, served as a resting place and overnight stop for people travelling with caravans. In 1974, it was designated a cultural monument and classified as immovable cultural heritage of exceptional importance. Its former function makes the Han a different historical point of interest from the four fortifications on the Kremna plateau: they date from the First Serbian Uprising and were designated cultural monuments in 1950.
The Moljković Well in Kremna was also designated a cultural monument, in 2001. Tarabića kuća is an example of folk architecture and cultural significance; it is under provisional protection. Those interested in the town’s history will find several themes here: caravan transport, the First Serbian Uprising and folk architecture.
Prophetic Tradition and Planning Your Visit
Miloš and Mitar Tarabić are associated with Kremna’s 19th-century prophetic tradition. The Spomen dom kremanskih proroka was built in the hamlet of Tarabići, below the Tara mountain range. At the Dom proroka, visitors can hear an interesting story about the Kremna Prophecy and the village; check before visiting whether this is currently available.
The Kremansko Proročanstvo complex is on the road to Tara, 3 km from the centre of Kremna. Booking by phone in advance on 064 150 60 88 is recommended. Call before travelling to confirm your visit arrangements.
Heritage Railway and Rural Hospitality
The starting station of the restored Šarganska Osmica heritage railway is in Šargan, in the western part of Kremna. The renewed railway runs between Šargan Vitasi and Mokra Gora. If you are planning a ride, check the timetable for your travel date. This lets you consider the heritage railway as a separate highlight alongside the cultural and historical sites.
Rural hospitality in Kremna includes gibanica, proja and pršuta, as well as dishes cooked in earthenware pots and roast pork and lamb. Homemade raspberry juice, rakija and cakes round out the selection. Alongside the landscape, monument history and railway, rural hospitality offers another perspective on Kremna.
