The Popova Voda memorial fountain, several stone monuments and the former school give Drijetanj a distinct historical character. At the same time, parts of the area are within the “Klisura Đetinje” Landscape Protection Area. For travel planning, local commemorative history and protected landscapes therefore go hand in hand. If you are looking for accommodation for a trip to Drijetanj, these two perspectives can help you match the character of the destination to your interests.

Protected Area and Hiking Route

The “Klisura Đetinje” Landscape Protection Area includes a karst gorge with caves. Parts of the Drijetanj area are within this protected area; its protected status therefore does not apply to the entire settlement. In the Drijetanj cadastral municipality, the area “Suvodol – Karajčića stene” is specifically designated; Protection Regime II applies there within the protected area.

Memorial Sites and Their Historical Context

The memorials in Drijetanj commemorate different people and historical events. The Popova Voda memorial fountain was erected in 1935 in honor of King Alexander and local soldiers who fell in the wars of 1912–1918. A stone monument bears the inscription that the national hero Željimir-Željo Đurić died in Drijetanj on November 29, 1941. The same monument identifies him as secretary of the OK KPJ. Another stone monument commemorates the death of the national hero Dragoljub Dugić; it identifies him as chairman of the Main NOO of Serbia. A memorial plaque on a commercial building lists the names of 21 fallen fighters.

The timeline spans remembrance of the wars of 1912–1918 and Đurić’s death in 1941. The forms of commemoration also differ: the fountain is a dedication, the stone monuments refer to individuals, and the memorial plaque names 21 people who fell. Together, they trace a commemorative arc from the wars to the two individuals named and the plaque listing 21 names.

The Former School

The former primary school building is also part of the area’s history. It was built in 1936; a school operated there until 1948, after which a new school was built in the village. The former school was among the first schools in the Užice area and was regarded as a kind of monument. The building was affected by a fire in January 2022. This timeline distinguishes the construction history of the former building from the later school operations in the village.

Hiking Route and Planning

The named hiking route “Drijetanj - walk around the village” runs around Drijetanj. It was uploaded in March 2024. As maps and trail conditions can change, check the latest map and conditions before setting out. The route provides a specific connection to the village, while the protected-area information describes a landscape and a named locality.
