Church art spanning several periods
A monumental iconostasis and an Italo-Cretan icon of the Virgin Mary from the 15th century make the Church of the Holy Trinity a cultural focal point in Nova Varoš. The church was built in 1862 by master builder Pero Ninčić. The iconostasis was created by Milija Marković, Rista Čajkanović and Pavle Čortanović; the icon of the Virgin Mary is among the most valuable icons. A bell was installed in the bell tower in 1864. Thus, a 15th-century icon, a 19th-century building and a bell from shortly afterwards come together in one structure. These different dates offer several clearly distinct reference points in the history of the church and its art.
Kaymakamija, local history museum and the town’s history
The building known as the Kaymakamija, also called “Bela golubica,” was built in 1909 and now houses the Nova Varoš local history museum. The museum opened on 1 November 2012 in the former Kaymakamija administrative building. Its collection spans from the Neolithic to the end of the First World War and comprises 240 original exhibits and three replicas. The church also brings together different periods: the icon of the Virgin Mary dates from the 15th century, while the building dates from 1862. A monument to vojvoda Petar Bojović was unveiled in Nova Varoš town square in 1997. The church, museum and monument each highlight different historical and cultural aspects.
Zlatar and regional specialties
Nova Varoš lies below the Zlatar mountain range, at an altitude of over 1,000 metres. The area’s culinary traditions include Zlatar cheese, honey, buckwheat and heljdopita. Alongside its art and cultural history, the trip therefore offers a distinct regional connection to food culture.
Nature excursions in the municipality
The Uvac Nature Reserve is one of the natural attractions in the municipality. Visits to the reserve must be announced or booked in advance. A hiking trail in the Uvac area starts near the Bukovik Dam. From Nova Varoš, it can be reached by vehicle via Akmačići and leads to a viewpoint. Griffon vultures and other birds can be observed along the route. The route therefore combines a specific hiking trail with a viewpoint and opportunities for birdwatching.
A boat trip on Zlatar Lake can start in Kokin Brod and includes observing griffon vultures at Čolovića Stene. The two excursions offer different experiences: the hiking trail leads to a viewpoint and allows for observations along the way, while Čolovića Stene is part of the observation itinerary on the boat trip.
