Four fast-flowing streams and a network of fifteen bridges define Krupanj, which lies in a widened valley. Bogoštica, Zmajevac, Čađavica and Kržava flow through the town and converge in the center to form the Likodra. Krupanj also lies in a basin surrounded by the foothills of the Boranja, Jagodnja and Sokolska mountains. Water and the mountain setting shape the landscape; the town’s architecture and history offer other points of interest.
Among Rivers, Bridges and Mountains
The surrounding area also offers natural attractions with varied features. About 6 km from Krupanj is Kovačević Cave, a protected natural phenomenon with stalactites, stalagmites, lakes and bat colonies. The excursion site of Zmajevac is 3 km away. It can be reached by paved road and footpaths, including trails along the Zmajevac River with rapids and waterfalls. Check local conditions before your visit.
Jagodnja is most easily reached from Krupanj via a paved road toward MaÄŤkov Kamen. The rivers in town and nearby natural features shape a landscape that encompasses Krupanj and destinations in the surrounding area.
Traces of Mining and Early Settlement
Remains of a Roman settlement and the ruins of a structure known as Vila Rustika have been preserved at the entrance to the town. A much later chapter in the town’s history is medieval silver mining, which made Krupanj an important mining town. Dubrovnik caravan routes also passed through the town. These traces connect the settlement with both early habitation and mining and trade.
Architectural History in the Town
The Old Pharmacy, also known as Villa of Pero Despić, is a state-protected building. It was built between 1899 and 1900 for Aca and Pero Despić from Vienna. The so-called “German style” is evident in the bricks and wooden beams used in its construction. Another architectural landmark is the Dom kulture Biblioteka “Politika” in Krupanj, considered a monumental work by architect Ivan Antić.
Two historic churches have different dates associated with them. The Old Church of the Ascension of the Lord was built in 1842. The foundation of the Memorial Church of the Ascension of the Lord with Ossuary was laid on September 22, 1920; the church was roofed in 1928. The ossuary is dedicated to the fallen warriors from MaÄŤkov Kamen and the surrounding area. The dates help distinguish the building histories of the two churches.
Trails, Sports and the Annual Calendar
Krupanj’s sports and leisure facilities include walking and cycling trails. The town’s sports infrastructure also includes a football pitch with artificial turf. By the end of 2019, about 300 km of marked hiking, cycling and mushroom-picking trails had been created in the municipality. This figure refers to the municipal area and the state of trail development at that time. Check local conditions when choosing a specific trail.
Lazareva subota, also known as Vrbica, is an annual event: the tradition takes place every April in the municipality of Krupanj. Dates and programmes may change, so check the information for your travel year if you plan your visit around the event. The tourist information center is located in the pedestrian zone. Its services include tourist information, souvenirs and electric bicycle rentals. If you plan to use any of these services, check availability in advance.
