Šabac reveals itself through its cultural heritage, the Sava and events for a variety of occasions. The Narodni Museum and Gospodar Jevremova Street offer historical points of interest; at Stari Grad Fortress, the riverside setting adds another dimension. When planning your trip, the key question is whether you would rather focus on urban history or on an event taking place at a specific time.

Museum and historic cityscape

The Narodni Museum in Šabac was founded on 11 January 1955. It is housed in the building of the former Šabac Lower Gymnasium, built in 1857. The two dates mark different chapters: the construction of the building and the founding of the museum. Here, you can encounter both an older building and a more recent institution in one place.

Gospodar Jevremova Street remains Šabac’s main promenade. It is also a cultural and historical ensemble and a unique protected heritage area with architectural and pronounced historical and urban-planning value. In 2006, it was designated an ensemble of exceptional cultural and historical importance. Those interested in urban history will find a different perspective here from the museum building: the street combines its present-day role as a promenade with recognized historical and architectural significance.

Events and cultural occasions

The Čivijada takes place every September in Šabac, before the Šabac Fair. Since 1968, its motto has been “Fair of Humour and Satire.” If you wish to plan your trip around this event, check the specific event dates in advance.

The Oktobarski Salon offers a different perspective on time: the event’s tradition began in 1954, and the salon is the oldest in Serbia. The Čivijada’s September date offers a recurring point of reference for trip planning, while the Oktobarski Salon can be viewed in the context of its long cultural history.

The Bazaar of Old and Artistic Crafts adds another dimension to this cultural perspective. It gives numerous craftspeople and hobbyists the opportunity to present their work and skills. Thus, alongside historic sites, craft traditions also feature in the city’s cultural landscape.

The Sava, the fortress and the swimming marathon

Stari Grad Fortress is on the right bank of the Sava, about one kilometre from the city centre. Its immediate surroundings have been developed into a recreation centre. The riverside location and approximate distance give you two specific points of reference for locating the fortress within Šabac.

The International Jarak–Šabac Swimming Marathon also takes place on the Sava: the 18 km and 880 m course runs between the village of Jarak in Srem and Šabac, finishing at Stari Grad beach. The programme also includes a cooking competition for fish dishes prepared in a cauldron. This event brings together swimming on the river and a culinary activity.

Science to observe

Nauke Šabac Park offers science activities for all age groups, starting with the youngest children in kindergarten. The project equips schoolyards with suitable installations to serve as open-air laboratories. There, pupils can observe and reflect on natural phenomena and scientific laws.

Organised visits to Nauke Šabac Park must be announced to the Centre for Professional Development five days in advance. If you are planning a group visit, confirm the procedure beforehand. This allows you to take the visit requirement into account when planning.
