Mali Zvornik offers two distinct highlights: historic structures carved into rock and Zvorničko jezero as a setting for kayaking and summer events. Its cultural history includes the underground town of Karađorđević, the rock church Crkva Časnog krsta – Mali Ostrog, and the archaeological site of Orlovine. The lake offers a different focus; Somovijada also gives travel planning a recurring reference point, taking place on the last weekend of July.
History carved into rock
The underground town of Karađorđević is carved into the rock in the center of Mali Zvornik, near the bridge of King Alexander I Karađorđević. It was built in the 1930s as King Alexander’s secret military command center in the event of war. The site and its original purpose are therefore closely connected with the king’s history. The complex comprises about 75 rooms and around 1.5 kilometers of passageways. These approximate figures add a sense of the structure’s scale to its historical purpose.
Rock church and archaeological traces
Another example of rock-cut architecture in Mali Zvornik is Crkva Časnog krsta – Mali Ostrog, a rock church carved into a cave. Its floor plan is cross-shaped; its length, width, and height are each 33 meters. The church is notable both for its design and for these three equal measurements.
The archaeological site of Orlovine contains remains of fortifications from the early Byzantine period and the early Middle Ages. The remains of structures there are described as approximately 1,400 and 1,000 years old, respectively. These two historical periods make Orlovine a different focus from the underground town dating to the 1930s: here, attention turns to much older structural remains and fortifications.
Collection and exhibition
The local history museum collection and exhibition “Vizantijski koreni Malog Zvornika” was opened in the gallery of the “17. septembar” Library. The collection is intended to preserve and display artifacts from the archaeological site of Orlovine. It is also intended to include parts of the legacy of King Alexander I Karađorđević, preserved in the cultural and historical complex of the underground town. The planned collection thus brings together objects from Orlovine and items from the Karađorđević complex. It adds a collection perspective to the remains of structures and the history of the rock-cut sites.
Zvorničko jezero and seasonal occasions
Zvorničko jezero extends 25 kilometers upstream from the 45-meter-high dam near Zvornik and Mali Zvornik. Kayaking is possible on the lake. Somovijada offers a specific seasonal point of reference: it has been held every summer since 1998 on the last weekend of July at Zvorničko jezero. For choosing when to travel, this is a different reference point from the general opportunity to kayak: the event is tied to a particular summer weekend, while kayaking is mentioned as an activity on the lake.
