At the confluence of the Drina and Ljuboviđa rivers, Ljubovija lies at an important geographical boundary: the town is on the right side of the alluvial plain formed by the Drina and its tributaries. It is also located on the Šabac–Bajina Bašta road. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the town itself from the broader places and features within the municipality. The Drina shapes the geographical setting and several events; some natural and cultural sites are outside the town center or are located within the municipality.

The Drina and recurring events

The Drina Regatta Ljubovija is organized by the municipal tourism organization every year on the second Saturday in July. Its water route covers 40 kilometers from Rogačica to Ljubovija. The regatta has been held for more than two decades. This means trip planning can take into account a recurring date, a specific route description, and the event’s connection with the Drina.

Another tradition is the Epiphany Cross swimming event on the Drina, which has been held in Ljubovija since 2007. It is listed in Serbia’s National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Unlike the regatta, for which the water route and July date are specified, the focus here is on the tradition and its heritage status. If you plan your trip around either of these dates, check the current program: event logistics for the regatta may vary, and arrangements for the swimming event may change.

Gastro Fest and Azbukovački bazaar

Gastro Fest takes place annually on the second Saturday in May. At the 2025 edition, visitors could sample food. Competitions include fish soup, goulash, kačamak, and traditional Serbian dishes; the specific competition details may vary from one edition to the next. The culinary focus connects the date with specific cooking competitions, but the program should not be assumed to be the same every year.

On November 8, the Azbukovački bazaar takes place on the streets of Ljubovija. It includes an all-day exhibition of handicrafts, traditional crafts, fruit, vegetables, flowers, food, and souvenirs; individual exhibitors may vary. The bazaar’s broad exhibition therefore differs from Gastro Fest, which focuses on food and cooking competitions. Check the program for the relevant edition before planning a trip around the date.

Church architecture and cultural history

The Church of the Transfiguration (“Crkva Svetog Preobraženja”) in Ljubovija is an example of church architecture from the first half of the 20th century, in the style of the medieval Moravian architectural school. The church was built from 1932 to 1939 and consecrated on September 21, 1940. The stylistic reference and the actual construction period are two different historical points of reference: the architecture draws on a medieval school, while the construction and consecration took place in the 20th century.

Ljubovija’s cultural life also includes the traditional annual concert by the “Azbukovica” Cultural and Artistic Association. Alongside the events held on set dates, this provides more than one reason to stay: the church offers a focus on architectural history, while the concert and festivals shape the events calendar.

The town center, the municipality, and routes

The stone arch bridge “Rimski most,” also known as “Jerinin most,” spans the Ljuboviđa and dates back to Roman times. It is outside the town center. The Trešnjica River Canyon is another nearby feature: it is a special nature reserve in the municipality of Opština Ljubovija. Near the canyon, a seven-kilometer route is known as the “Đačka staza.”

The challenging Ljubovija–Bele Vode–Tornička Bobija route is 25.4 kilometers long and forms part of the European long-distance path E7, which passes through western Serbia. The two routes can be distinguished by their stated lengths: seven kilometers for the Đačka staza and 25.4 kilometers for the challenging route. Conditions on the Ljubovija–Bele Vode–Tornička Bobija route may change; check conditions before setting out.

Choose accommodation to suit your itinerary

If you are looking for hotels in Ljubovija, first decide whether your stay will focus mainly on events and church architecture in town or also include routes and natural features elsewhere in the municipality. For trips to a festival, timing is another consideration: plan around the program for the relevant edition.
