Underground, vaulted or flat-ceilinged halls and passages with irregular surfaces define the Târgu Ocna Salt Mine. At the surface, a leisure complex has been established; the town museum, Biserica Buna Vestire (Răducanu) and the Măgura Nature Reserve also represent the town’s varied themes. Târgu Ocna Salt Mine: Underground Spaces and Surface Facilities
The underground tourist complex at the salt mine has courts for mini-football, basketball, tennis and table tennis. Its spatial design is also specifically described: the interior consists of halls and passages with vaulted or flat ceilings and irregular surfaces. Alongside the sports facilities, the form and structure of the underground spaces are themselves key aspects of the salt mine.
The Orthodox Church of Sfânta Varvara is also located within the salt deposit. Established in 1992, it is considered Europe’s first underground Orthodox church. At the surface, the leisure complex, established in 2010, includes a saltwater pool, showers, a medical office, a terrace and a shop. The underground church and sports courts on the one hand, and the pool and other surface facilities on the other, describe different areas of the complex.
Town History and Collections
The Muzeul de Istorie Târgu-Ocna holds collections covering archaeology, art, local history, numismatics and ethnography. The range of subjects is also reflected in individual objects: exhibits include Neolithic pottery, Bronze Age pottery, and tools made of flint, bone, stone and bronze. Visitors with a particular interest in early material culture will find both pottery and tools made from a variety of materials.
Numismatics is another distinct focus of the collections. Its collection comprises more than 400 pieces. The museum thus offers archaeological objects as well as an extensive coin collection and other cultural history themes. The various collections give a visit a different focus from the architecture of Răducanu Church or the underground spaces of the salt mine.
Architecture at Biserica Buna Vestire
Biserica Buna Vestire (Răducanu) is a representative architectural monument of the late Moldavian Baroque. Its defining architectural features include a trefoil plan, a dome above the naos and a bell tower on the western porch. These elements describe both the church’s layout and its characteristic silhouette.
The enclosure of the former monastery has also been preserved: 5.20-metre-high walls with loopholes and two towers stand on three sides. Răducanu Church is therefore more than just the form of a religious building; the surviving boundaries also reveal the historic monastery complex.
The Măgura Natural Area
The Măgura Târgu Ocna Nature Reserve is protected at the national level, covers 89.70 hectares and is primarily botanical and forestry in character. It lies within the city of Târgu Ocna, on the right bank of the Trotuș and the left bank of the Slănic. Its elevations range from 310 to 700 metres. The protected area thus offers a nature-focused experience alongside the town’s cultural history and underground attractions.
The salt lake Lacul fără fund, also called Groapa Burlacu, lies in Parcul Măgura. The two names refer to the same lake. Together with the larger, nationally protected natural area, it offers another way to include the landscape around Târgu Ocna in your travel plans.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
The Târgu Ocna Salt Mine is accessible via the Adjud–Ciceu railway line.
