Slanic-Moldova offers hiking options with very different time commitments: from a 45-minute walk to a viewpoint to a nine- to ten-hour route across the main ridge of the Nemira Mountains. Mineral springs, a park and architecture add a distinctive local history to the focus on nature. For planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between a short outing, a longer hike and cultural stops.
Hiking Trails by Duration and Character
The Valea Uzului hiking trail crosses the main ridge of the Nemira Mountains and takes nine to ten hours. The Șaua Nemirei trail starts in Slănic-Moldova and takes four to five hours. The difference is significant when planning your day: the nine to ten hours on Valea Uzului take considerably longer than the four to five hours on Șaua Nemirei.
The 300 de scări trail starts near the mineral springs area and, on the return, follows the Popas area along Cheile Slănicului. Cheile Slănicului and Cascada Slănicului are part of this trail. As an easy forest walk, it requires neither special physical preparation nor specific mountain-hiking equipment; it can be walked in summer and winter.
The Traseu Belvedere route starts in Parcul Central and leads to a viewpoint after a two-kilometre walk lasting 45 minutes. This offers an option with a shorter stated walking time alongside the longer hikes. For winter sports, the Nemira ski slope is another option: it is 1,414 metres long, rated easy and has an average gradient of 17.6 percent. Seasonal operations may vary; check whether the slope will be operating during your travel dates.
Mineral Springs and Local History
The first mineral spring in Slănic-Moldova was discovered on 20 July 1801 by Serdar Mihalache Spiridon. The spa town currently has nine licensed mineral springs. The history of its mineral waters is also marked by specific milestones: they received gold medals at exhibitions in Vienna (1873), at the World’s Fair in Paris (1889) and at the Cooperative Exhibition in Bucharest (1894).
Parcul Central covers 4.16 hectares and offers tourists an attractively landscaped setting for leisure activities. The Foișor Muzical, a music pavilion in the Art Nouveau style, stands in the park. Cazinoul Regal was completed in 1894 to the plans of architects George Sterian and H. Rick. Together, the park, pavilion and building offer concrete points of reference for exploring the town’s cultural history.
Traditions and Events
The Festival of Christmas and New Year Customs in the Old Style has become a tradition, bringing together bear groups, masked groups and groups of Christmas carol singers from the valleys of the Slănic and Trotuș. On 5 January 2025, the festival was held for the seventh time in Parcul Central.
Another example from local cultural life was “La izvor de tradiție”: in August 2025, Slănic-Moldova hosted this two-day event dedicated to tradition, folk costume and folk singing.
