Fortress history, the railway and Csángó daily life offer different historical perspectives on Ghimeș-Făget; there are also two hiking options with different planning details. This lets you decide whether your trip should focus more on cultural history or on a specific stage description. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Rákóczi Fortress was part of a complex fortification system comprising ramparts, trenches and defensive bastions. It served to protect the border between Transylvania and Moldavia. This historical role draws attention to a system made up of several components, rather than just a single structure.

Cultural History from Different Perspectives

The Gyimesbükki Tájház was created by ethnographer Antalné Tankó Mária and offers insight into the daily life of the Csángó. Its focus is therefore on ways of life, setting it apart from military border history and railway history. Those interested in everyday culture will find a different perspective here than in the historical accounts of fortifications and the railway.

Railway Guardhouse No. 30 houses an exhibition on railway history. It presents railway life of the period and the history of border protection. The building was constructed during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and was the easternmost railway guardhouse in historic Hungary. The exhibition’s theme and historical context complement each other: you get a glimpse of daily railway operations and the guardhouse’s geographical significance at the time.

The Kontumác Chapel is located on the grounds of the Kontumác quarantine station. During epidemics, it provided spiritual support to people quarantined there. The chapel adds the history of quarantine and pastoral care to the military and transport-history perspectives.

Music is also part of the area’s cultural offerings: a 2024 report describes the Stradivarius concert in Ghimeș-Făget as a tradition in the Stradivarius Tour program and mentions spectators from across the country. Alongside the historic buildings, this provides a musical point of reference for planning your cultural itinerary.

If you’re choosing a cultural focus, the themes point in different directions: the Tájház explores Csángó daily life, the guardhouse connects the railway with border protection, and the chapel represents pastoral care during quarantine. This makes it possible to explore local history through everyday life, transport and religion.

Hiking with Different Planning Details

The red M05 Via Mariae route is listed between Târgu Mureş, Miercurea Ciuc (Șumuleu Ciuc) and Ghimeș-Făget. Its first day starts at Capela Contumaț, passes through Apahavas and Pârâul Ugra, and ends at Biserica din Lunca de Sus or Colegiul Sfânta Elisabeta. The stage covers 20.7 km. This description gives you a clear sequence and distance for planning your day; check the route details before setting off.

The Bacău County Council installed tourist orientation and information signs along the Ghimeș–Vf. Bilibok mountain hiking trail. The planning information therefore differs: for the Via Mariae, the route and daily distance are specified, while for the Bilibok trail, orientation signs are mentioned. The information offers different points of reference, depending on whether you’re planning a specific day hike or navigating the mountain trail.
