The trails across Vârful Viscol and to the summit of Cărunta give Agăș a strong focus on hiking. At the same time, the old wooden church in Goioasa and ecclesiastical events tell of the community’s religious and artisanal life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Agăș, these different highlights can help with your travel planning: a long mountain hike needs its own substantial block of time, while the history of the area’s religious culture offers a different way to experience the place.

Mountain trails with different markings

The hike from Vârful Viscol via Lacul Șolintar to Păstrăvăria Cărunta is described as a challenging route and is estimated to take around eight to nine hours. The section from Vârful Viscol to Lacul Șolintar is marked with a red cross. From the lake, the trail continues to Păstrăvăria Cărunta, marked with a yellow triangle. For planning purposes, the stated duration means this is not a short add-on between other activities, but a hike that can fill a full day.

Another mountain hike starts in Diaconești and follows a blue cross to the summit of Cărunta at an elevation of 1,517 metres. After two kilometres, the trail passes near Mănăstirea Diaconești. A rise along the way offers views of the Trotuș Valley and the Tarcău Mountains. The two-kilometre distance refers to the section up to the area near the monastery, not the total length of the hike.

A mountain hike announced in 2024 also started in the village of Beleghet; from there, travellers drove to the trailhead at Vârful Viscol. The trail descriptions date from different years: an account of the Diaconești trail is dated 10 June 2020, while a description of the Viscol route is from 2024. Before setting off, check the trail markings and current conditions; for the Viscol hike, also factor the stated duration into your day’s plans.

Churches, pilgrimages and crafts

The old wooden church in Goioasa dates from 1837. It offers a tangible point of interest for anyone curious about the community’s ecclesiastical heritage. Hundreds of worshippers gathered at Mănăstirea Diaconești to venerate the icon Maica Domnului-Altărița. The site is therefore also associated with a religious pilgrimage tradition.

Another historically dated glimpse comes from a cycling trip on 24 June 2015: a church youth project took children from parishes in the Muntelui Valley to the “Pogorârea Duhului Sfânt” Monastery in the village of Cotumba, in the commune of Agăș. The example brings together church life and a group outdoor activity, without suggesting that an event is currently scheduled.

From 18 to 24 August 2025, the parish of Agăș hosted the eleventh edition of the summer school “Util, plăcut, frumos în Lumina Lui Hristos”. The programme included stained glass, beekeeping with a glass observation hive, woodworking, pyrography and pottery on the wheel. The topics thus ranged from traditional materials and crafts to religiously oriented community events. The summer school was a specific programme held in August 2025, not a general activity offered to visitors.
