In the Slănic Valley, beech and fir forests stand alongside subalpine meadows. This is a striking natural backdrop for Bacau: the region’s character comes not only from individual sights, but also from its diverse habitats. Nasolea Mare Waterfall offers a different landscape. It lies on the Uz River at an elevation of around 500 metres, in the middle Uz Gorge between the northern edge of the Nemira Mountains and the Ciuc Mountains.

Forest, Steppe and Water

In the Perchiu Nature Reserve, steppe and forest vegetation intertwine to form a forest-steppe habitat. The area is classified under IUCN Category IV as a nature reserve focused primarily on flora and forestry. Here, plant life takes centre stage, while the Slănic Valley, with its forests and meadows, offers a different picture of nature.

Lacul Bălătău also tells a story of the power of the landscape: this natural reservoir was formed by a landslide. In 1883, the Izvorul Negru stream was dammed. The year refers to the damming of the stream; the lake’s formation is attributed to the landslide.

Hemeiuș Dendrological Park is home to more than 1,300 rare and native tree and shrub species. The park lies in the floodplain of the Bistrița. It is also home to a medieval-style residence known as Castelul Roşu. Nature and architectural history meet here, without reducing the park to a single feature.

Museums of Nature, Music and Architecture

The “Ocrotirea Naturii” exhibition at the Bacău Museum of Natural Sciences is dedicated to the natural heritage of Bacău County. Another facet of the region’s cultural history can be found in Tescani: this is where George Enescu completed his lyrical opera “Oedip,” which he dedicated to Maruca Cantacuzino. Since 2007, the memorial house in Tescani has been a department of the George Enescu National Museum.

In Bacău, the “George Bacovia” Memorial House also commemorates the poet. It has operated as a museum since 1 October 1971; the house-shaped building dates from the last decade of the 19th century. The Ion Borcea Memorial House focuses on science: photographs, exhibits and authentic pieces of furniture offer insights into the scientist’s life and work.

Observations in the Sky and at the Vivarium

A full visit to the “Victor Anestin” Astronomical Observatory includes the exhibitions “From Earth to the Stars” and “News in Space Exploration,” a planetarium show, and a visit to the circular terrace overlooking the panorama of Bacău. The observatory also regularly holds public observations of astronomical phenomena and celestial bodies. The exhibitions, show, view and observations offer different ways to explore astronomy.

The Bacău Vivarium showcases native and exotic fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, as well as ornamental pigeon breeds. Its variety of animal groups makes it a distinct natural history attraction alongside the region’s landscapes, forests and plant life.

Folklore, Mineral Springs and Regional Cuisine

The traditional Festivalul Judeţean de Folclor helps preserve the authentic folklore of Bacău County. The regions represented include the Trotuș Valley, the Siret Valley, Oituz, Cașin and Zeletin. In July, the festival concludes with a gala performance in the spa town of Slănic-Moldova. If you plan to attend the gala, check the specific event dates before your trip.

Slănic-Moldova has mineral springs and has been a destination for relaxation and treatment since 1801. Another recurring cultural event is the European Night of Museums: the “Ion Borcea” Museum Complex of Natural Sciences in Bacău has celebrated it every year since 2007. For a different taste of local cuisine, visit the Domeniul Cerbului restaurant. It uses fresh ingredients from local producers and cooks according to traditional family recipes.

Practical directions are also part of discovering the region: Salina Târgu Ocna can be reached via the DN12A. Bacau brings together landscapes, natural history, music history, astronomy, folklore and cuisine—different reasons to make your own interests a priority when planning your trip.
