Today’s Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau de Mazarefes was initially a chapel of the Benedictine Congregation of Compostela’s “little monastery.” It later served as a private family chapel for the noble Pereiras de Mazarefes family; today it is the parish church. This change gives Mazarefes a clear cultural and historical focus. Veiga de São Simão offers a different connection with nature.
Churches and traces of local history
Capela de São Simão preserves the site of the original parish church, São Simão da Junqueira de Mazarefes. This distinguishes it from Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau: Capela recalls the site of the original parish church, while Igreja itself has gone through several phases of use. The local history therefore concerns two different connections to churches, not two names for the same building.
The former family chapel of the Pereiras family was handed over to the parish of Mazarefes. The coats of arms of the Pereiras Pessanhas can be seen on the south-facing side wall of Igreja. Near the church, remains of the passageway to the church choir can be found in the ruins of the old manor house, which was damaged by fire. A member of the family also had a granite tomb built for himself against one of the side walls of the family chapel.
The visible traces represent different aspects of this history: the coat of arms points to the family connection, the passageway to the link between the old manor house and the church choir, and the tomb to the personal commission of a family member. This makes it possible to distinguish the heraldic, architectural and personal clues from one another.
Wetland and other heritage themes
Veiga de São Simão is a wetland of approximately 700 ha on the left bank of the Lima estuary. It serves as a refuge and feeding ground for several species of wading and water birds. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a clear focus: in addition to its approximate area, the wetland’s defining feature is its role as a habitat.
Mamoa de Mazarefes adds a distinct cultural and historical dimension. It is listed as a megalithic monument in the municipal planning regulations published in 2026. This classification places it in a different heritage group from the parish church and the historic family chapel. It adds an independent megalithic connection to the history of the church and family.
A municipal investment proposal classifies Praia Fluvial de S. Simão, in the area of União de Freguesia de Mazarefes e Vila Fria, as a natural, recreational and leisure space.
Choose the right focus for your trip
To decide whether Mazarefes suits your travel interests, it helps to understand the differences: the church buildings and manor house remains represent a history of changing uses, while Veiga offers a specific connection with wetlands and birdlife. Mamoa and Praia Fluvial round out the options with a megalithic monument and a municipally designated natural and recreational space, respectively. If you are looking for a hotel in Mazarefes, these themes can help guide the focus of your trip.
