Ceramics history, local festivals and archaeological traces give Alvarães its distinctive character. The town lies on the right bank of the Rio Neiva, in mostly flat, clay-rich terrain with gentle rises. If you are planning a stay, you can use the specific places and event dates as a guide and choose the focus of your trip accordingly.

Ceramics history in Alvarães

The Fornos Telheiros de Alvarães were built at the end of the 19th century and remained in operation until the middle of the 20th century. Craftspeople made roof tiles and hand-shaped bricks there. Two former ceramic kilns at the site have been reconstructed as a memorial for present and future generations. The kilns are therefore both a reminder of earlier production and a means of preserving this heritage.

Another landmark in the town’s industrial history is the Fábrica Jerónimo Pereira Campos & Filhos, built in 1935. It produced red and refractory bricks, stoneware pipes, craft ceramics and sanitary products. Comparing the two sites shows different aspects of local ceramics: the Fornos highlight craft production and the preserved former kilns, while the factory illustrates the range of products made there.

Archaeological and local traces

The Mamoa de Alvarães is a megalithic tomb monument around 5,000 years old in the Alvarães parish. It is near the village of Paço and the Resulima facilities, and forms part of a larger group of similar monuments in the Vale do Neiva. The tomb monument points to a much older period than the ceramics industry.

The Alminhas are also part of the local cultural heritage: there are 21 in Alvarães; one of the Alminhas do Calvário bears a granite inscription from 1669. The dated inscription offers a specific historical reference point alongside the much older archaeological traces.

Lagoa da Costeira is a park at Rua das Lagoas, 4905-204. Its address can be useful when finding your way around the town. Together with the Mamoa, the Alminhas and the ceramics sites, the park shows that the town’s history is not limited to a single period or theme.

Via Sacra and Festa das Cruzes

The Via Sacra is a religious procession featuring live tableaux. It takes place every year on the weekend before Easter, with around 150 participants. The Festa das Cruzes falls on the third weekend in May. The entire community takes part in making the floats and crosses. The two dates offer different focal points in the travel calendar: the Via Sacra is a pre-Easter event, while the Festa das Cruzes takes place in May.

Planning your journey and accommodation

The CP timetable, valid from 14 December 2025, lists Alvarães on the Linha do Minho. This validity date applies to that timetable; check the timetable relevant to your travel dates before setting off. The event dates given above are a useful reference point when planning a hotel stay. First decide which festival you would like to experience, then look for accommodation for the relevant period. Check availability for your travel dates before finalising your plans.
