Two granite objects give Ermida a distinct cultural character: the Estátua Menir and Pedra dos Namorados are on display at the Núcleo Museológico da Ermida. The Miradouro da Ermida provides a contrasting landscape, with views of the agricultural terraces around Ermida. Local craft traditions, festive days, and activities along the Ribeira da Carcerelha add to the picture. When planning a stay, visitors can decide whether their main interest is archaeological forms, local customs, mountain scenery, or nature by the water.

Menhir, Granite Slab, and Local Traditions

The Estátua Menir is a female sculpture made from regional granite. It dates from between the late 3rd and mid-2nd millennia BC. The Pedra dos Namorados offers a different perspective: it is a 1.80-meter-high granite slab bearing two anthropomorphic, or human-like, figures. One is female, the other male; they are holding hands. The objects differ in form and subject: a female granite sculpture on the one hand, and a pair of figures on a slab on the other. This makes it possible to focus on their materials and depictions without confusing the two pieces.

Weaving and basketry are among the local craft traditions. Festive days also shape the year in Ermida. The Festa a Nossa Senhora de Fátima is celebrated on August 15. São Silvestre is observed on the last day of the year: residents gather around a large communal bonfire to eat and drink. Visitors who want to plan their trip around one of these festivities can check the specific dates.

Views and Traces of Mountain History

The Miradouro da Ermida is situated between the deep valley of the Ribeira da Carcerelha and the deep valley of the Froufe River. From there, visitors can look out over the agricultural terraces around Ermida. The Freguesia Ermida lies in the mountainous Serra Amarela, which is part of the Serra do Gerês massif. Both the valleys and the terraces are therefore central to the landscape.

Another trace of the past leads to Branda de Bilhares. This former temporary mountain settlement has preserved traces of Roman habitation in the area. Three species of wild orchids bloom in the meadows around Branda de Bilhares from May to August. The site offers different points of interest: the history of a former mountain settlement and a nature attraction with a clearly defined seasonal window.

Activities by the Water and When to Visit

Canyoning is possible along the Ribeira da Carcerelha, and the natural pools along the watercourse are used for swimming. The two activities offer different experiences: canyoning takes place along the Ribeira, while swimming centers on the pools. Visitors can choose based on the kind of nature experience they want.

For travel planning, the stated time periods can be compared: the orchids bloom from May to August, the Festa a Nossa Senhora de Fátima takes place on August 15, and São Silvestre is held on the last day of the year. The flowering period overlaps with the August festival date, while São Silvestre falls at the end of the year.
