Inside the Santuário do Calvário do Bom Jesus is a carved wooden altar in the Rococo style. Together with its churches, historic estates and hillside facing the Rio Minho, the area offers several focal points for a stay: architectural history, landscape and regional cuisine.

Churches and historic architecture

A monumental staircase, flanked by four chapels, leads to the Santuário. The Festa de S. Paio e de Nossa Senhora das Dores was celebrated there until the beginning of the 21st century. Both the architectural complex and a historically rooted festive tradition are therefore part of the sanctuary’s cultural significance.

The Igreja Paroquial de Gondarém is also known as the Igreja de São Pedro. It has three rectangular naves and a square chancel and is considered an example of regional Manueline architecture. With its three rectangular naves and square chancel, it is considered an example of regional Manueline architecture.

Manor houses and local traditions

The Solar da Loureira is an 18th-century building. In front of it stands a fountain, also dating from the 18th century, which was brought here from the Convento de S. Paio in 1899. The fountain’s date and its relocation tell two different parts of its history.

The Casa da Loureira, also known as the Solar dos Cadavais, developed through successive building phases from the 16th to the 20th century. Its architectural history thus spans several centuries, unlike the single date associated with the Solar da Loureira. The Paço do Outeiral complex includes a chapel dedicated to Santa Ana, with an altarpiece and azulejos. The Rancho Folclórico e Infantil carries on Gondarém’s customs and traditions.

Landscape, riverbanks and trails

Gondarém lies on a hillside facing the Rio Minho. The Ilha da Boega extends along the municipalities of Loivo and Gondarém. Some fish species, wild ducks, geese and other animals live in a semi-free state at Lago dos Patos; the presence of these species may vary seasonally.

Praia Fluvial da Mota has a small white-sand beach and no facilities. The Ecopista starts at this Praia Fluvial da Mota and runs through all of Gondarém, always along the banks of the Rio Minho. The Trilho do Monte de Góiôs is also located in the municipality of Gondarém. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

The places and trails mentioned offer different experiences: a small beach area without facilities, the Ecopista’s continuous riverside route through the municipality, and the Trilho located in Gondarém.

Cuisine and directions

Gondarém’s local cuisine includes Arroz de lampreia and Debulho de sável. These two dishes give you a specific point of reference if regional cuisine is a consideration when planning your trip.

For directions: if you are coming from Caminha via the Estrada Nacional 13, you will reach Gondarém at Alto da Mota.
