A riverside beach lies on the banks of the Rio Lima. Santa Cruz Do Lima combines this connection to the river with an early parish history and archaeological and architectural traces. This offers a range of options for planning your trip: local history, riverside scenery, wine and local festivals.
Church and historical traces
The parish of Santa Cruz Do Lima already existed before the 13th century. The parish church has an 18th-century pulpit and a covered cross. The PĂşlpito in the village is considered possibly the most impressive pulpit among the parish churches of what is now the Ponte de Lima deanery. Thus, the early parish history and a clearly dated work of art offer two distinct historical points of reference.
Other clues span archaeology and historic architecture. The archaeological site IGREJA in Santa Cruz Do Lima is classified as a Roman settlement. The names Monte do Castelo and Penedo do Castelo recall possible former castles or hill forts. The mills on the Côvo River are among the cultural-historical and tourist attractions of Santa Cruz Do Lima. Quinta do Paçal is considered a manor estate.
Rio Lima and routes
The Rio Lima caters to two different interests: there is a riverside beach on its banks, and its waters offer the opportunity for sport fishing. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the riverside setting or the opportunity to fish.
The Ecovia do Rio Lima reaches Santa Cruz Do Lima and then continues into the municipality of Ponte da Barca. A route of about 11 km along the left bank of the Rio Lima also eventually reaches the village. Depending on what you want to plan, you can focus on the continuation towards Ponte da Barca or on the approximate length and riverside location of the route. The village therefore offers both a connection to a longer route and a more precisely described stretch along the river.
Wine, harvest and feast days
Visitors can take part in the grape harvest at Quinta de Luou. The estate also offers a programme by prior arrangement that includes a wine tasting, a meal afterwards and a visit to the estate. The two options have different focuses: during the grape harvest, you take part in the harvest; the arranged programme combines a tasting, a meal and a visit to the estate in a set order. If this programme suits your reason for travelling, take the prior arrangement requirement into account when planning.
Local feast days also provide specific dates to plan around. The feast in honour of Senhora do Livramento takes place on 15 August and is one of the parish’s most important festive traditions. The Festa do Senhor is also part of the calendar and is associated with the Feast of Corpus Christi. The two feasts offer different points of reference in time: a date in August and a feast linked to a religious holiday. If you are travelling specifically for a celebration, check the date in advance.
Pyrotechnics are also among the local craft traditions.
