Discover Afife through two distinct sides: Praia de Afife, with its seasonally changing surfing conditions, and a rich cultural heritage. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the beach and culture separately: the coast provides a guide for a seaside stay, while places, traditions and crafts reveal Afife’s history in different ways.

Beach and Surfing Conditions

Praia de Afife is accessible via wooden walkways that run through the dunes while helping to protect them. The walkways are therefore part of finding your way to the beach, without damaging the dunes. If you are interested in surfing, you will find suitable conditions here, although they vary by season. Check the conditions for your planned visit rather than assuming a particular quality of surf.

There is also a difference within the beach that can help with planning: the southern area is recommended for children. A stream flows into the sea there and sometimes forms a small lagoon. This feature is explicitly changeable. If you are travelling with children, you can use the southern section as a guide, but do not plan on the lagoon being a permanent feature of the beach.

Castro Culture and Traces of the Past

The PR24 – Castros Trail begins and ends at Monte de Santo António in the parish of Afife. It showcases the municipality’s landscape, ecological and cultural richness. Its highlighted points and themes include the Monastery of São João de Cabanas, rock engravings and Cividade de Afife. The trail description thus covers different aspects of local heritage without reducing them to a single type of monument.

Cividade de Afife is a fortified village of the Castro culture. Mamoa da Eireira represents a different form of heritage: this megalithic burial monument lies at the northern entrance to the municipality of Afife. The rock engravings of Afife, in turn, are located on a rock beside a forest path, near the access path to Cividade. This description of their location helps distinguish the engravings from the fortified settlement and the burial monument.

Crafts, Clothing and Cultural Life

Afife’s cultural history is also reflected in its crafts and clothing. Decorative stucco work developed here into a distinct profession from the mid-18th century. The Traje à Vianesa has its own variant from Afife. Both examples offer a glimpse of local particularities that go beyond the archaeological sites.

Casino Afifense was officially inaugurated on 22 December 1935 and went on to become a centre of cultural expression in Afife. The date places its history in context; its cultural character adds to the picture of local traditions and historic sites.

Traditions Throughout the Year

During the Sarração da Velha, the procession passes along Afife’s roads on Ash Wednesday at around 9:30 pm, continuing to Mesa do Cruzeiro. There, the will is read and the traditional Auto de Fé is performed. Queima do Judas is a separate custom: it takes place on the Saturday before Easter Sunday at Mesa de Pedra do Cruzeiro. The two traditions therefore have different dates and named locations. If you are planning your trip around either event, check the current event dates before you leave.

Afife offers several different options: the beach and surfing conditions, archaeological remains, cultural history or a stay timed around a local tradition. Which of these is most important to your trip can guide your choice of when to visit and the kind of stay that suits you.
