A circular trail that starts and ends at the BioRia Centre, a wooden walkway along the AntuĂŁ, and a former factory building turned museum: Estarreja offers a range of ways to plan a trip that combines nature and culture. Events and regional dishes reveal other sides of the town and the municipality of Estarreja.
Experience Nature on Foot
The Salreu circular trail starts and ends at the BioRia Centre for Environmental Interpretation. It is about 8 kilometres long, and the route is estimated to take around two and a half hours. The route is rated easy because it has no elevation changes. The combination of distance, estimated duration and difficulty rating gives you practical guidance when planning your day.
Another way to explore the landscape along the AntuĂŁ River is at Parque Municipal do AntuĂŁ. The park, which covers around 4.6 hectares, lies between the urban area of Estarreja and the riverbed. A wooden walkway runs alongside part of the riverbank. Visitors can observe local wildlife and plant life from the walkway, and information panels provide additional details along the way. You can choose between two different nature experiences: a longer circular route in Salreu and a park with a walkway and opportunities for observation along the AntuĂŁ.
Buildings, Art and History
At Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz, the building’s former use is part of the museum itself: it is housed in the renovated former Hidro-Eléctrica de Estarreja, a former rice-husking factory. Casa-Museu Marieta Solheiro Madureira offers a different perspective on local history. It was converted from a residence designed in the late 1940s. Both museums combine their present-day function with a distinctive history of construction and use.
Street art is also part of the cultural offering: since September 2016, Estarreja has been an urban art museum through ESTAU. Guided tours of the ESTAU route last about one hour and 30 minutes. If you would like to plan this tour, check its availability in advance.
Events and Local Cuisine
ObservaRia – Estarreja Birdwatching Fair focuses on different aspects of birds and nature. Its programme includes birdwatching, nature tourism, photography, science communication, environmental education and awareness of environmental protection. It also includes field trips, while the lecture series is open to all members of the public. The event combines practical nature observation with learning.
Carnaval de Estarreja has a long tradition and has been celebrated since 1897. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors come to the children’s and adults’ parades, which feature more than 2,000 performers. Visitor and participant numbers may vary. The accompanying programme also includes visits to the backstage area. The traditional Festas de Santo António de Estarreja honour the municipality’s patron saint. The Marchas Populares for Santo António feature hundreds of costumed performers parading through Estarreja with themes drawn from folk and traditional culture; dates and programme may vary. Mercado Antigo recreates life in historical settings at the end of the 19th century and in the mid-1940s. Programme dates may vary here, too.
For culinary discoveries, every year all the municipalities in the Estarreja district hold festivals called “Tasquinhas de Gastronomia Regional”. The festivals serve dishes such as Rojões, eel dishes, food made with broa and typical regional sweets. These local dishes add another reason to explore the municipalities in the district, alongside their natural and cultural attractions.
