Macieira de Alcôba can be explored through its trails and cultural and historical sites. A two-kilometre nature trail passes through gardens, fields and woodland; a permanent exhibition is dedicated to traditional maize culture. There are also churches, mills and a wooden zigzag promenade as distinctive features of the village. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different trail profiles and cultural attractions separately.

Trails with Different Profiles

The Estação da Biodiversidade de Macieira de Alcôba is a two-kilometre trail. It passes through vegetable gardens, orchards, maize fields and a pine forest. The PR3 Trilho da Aldeia, by contrast, is a short circular route along village and rural paths, suitable for walking and cycling. While a specific length is given for the Estação, the PR3’s circular layout and stated uses are its defining features. The PR3 starts and ends at Largo da Igreja de S. Martinho in Macieira de Alcôba.

Another trail destination is the Piscina Natural de Macieira de Alcôba: the PR4 Trilho Terras de Granito starts next to the Igreja Matriz de Macieira de Alcôba and leads there along its route. The wooden Escadaria do Outeiro da Vila offers a different perspective on the village. Its zigzag promenade runs from Rua da Barreira through the village to Outeiro da Vila, next to the Nossa Senhora de Fátima chapel in the centre of Macieira de Alcôba.

Landscape and Ancient Woodlands

The Estação da Biodiversidade is also home to old, stately oaks and chestnut trees. They are considered remnants of the forests that once grew in the Serra do Caramulo. The trail thus brings together a variety of landscape features along a known length: vegetable gardens and orchards, maize fields and pine forest, as well as the old trees. If you would like to get to know the area through its vegetation, this clearly defined trail takes you through these different settings.

Traditional Maize Culture and Village History

The Centro Interpretativo da Aldeia do Milho Antigo has a permanent exhibition on the landscape, architecture and territory, as well as the traditional tangible and intangible culture associated with traditional maize. It places the focus on maize culture within a broader local context. The Igreja Paroquial de São Martinho de Alcôba is also part of the village’s architectural history: it was built from granite blocks, and some walls from its predecessor church, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, have been preserved.

The village also has traditional stone houses and outdoor areas with benches and tables, where you can take in the landscape. Together with the church and exhibition, these offer a way to explore the village not only through its trails and nature, but also through its architecture and cultural heritage.

Mills and Activities for Children

A small Levada channels water to the Moinhos de rodízio de Macieira de Alcôba; you can walk along the watercourse. This combines a waterside walk with the historic mills, without equating it with one of the hikes described.

The Centro Interpretativo da Aldeia do Milho Antigo offers educational activities for children. These include a village treasure hunt, visits to working watermills, a little magic theatre and making your own cornmeal and chocolate cupcakes. Check in advance whether these activities will be available during your trip.
