Vrouwenpolder offers a range of ways to enjoy the water, nature and local history. At the beach, you can swim, play sports, stroll along the coast and go kitesurfing; at Deltapark Neeltje Jans, you can also experience the 4D presentation about the 1953 flood disaster and take boat tours on the Oosterschelde. This gives you different options to choose from: beach activities, a visit to the park or a closer look at local history.

Beach and Kitesurfing

At Vrouwenpolder beach, you can swim, play sports and stroll along the coast. The beach is wheelchair accessible, and you can also book a kitesurfing lesson there. At the Vrouwenpolder kitesurfing spot, high tide turns the sandbanks into an inland sea with shallow water, making it suitable for beginner kitesurfing lessons. Wind and tides vary depending on when you visit. Bear these changing conditions in mind when planning a lesson.

Water Experiences at Deltapark Neeltje Jans

At Deltapark Neeltje Jans in Vrouwenpolder, the Delta Experience uses a 4D panorama to convey the destructive power of water in connection with the 1953 flood disaster. Boat tours on the Oosterschelde are also available. This means the park offers both a historical perspective on water and a boat trip on the Oosterschelde. Individual attractions may change, so check the current offerings before your visit. You can reach the park via the N57 from Middelburg or Rotterdam. Check road conditions before setting off as well.

Oranjezon: Paths Through Dunes and Forest

In Oranjezon, paths lead through protected dune valleys, forest, dune scrub, shifting dunes and dune grassland. Four walking routes pass the highlights of the area. These habitats show that Oranjezon is more than just a dune landscape: it also includes forest, scrub and dune grassland. The availability of individual routes may vary; checking your chosen route before your visit can help with planning.

Church and Fort: Different Chapters of History

Vrouwenpolder’s Reformed Church acquired its present form through reconstruction between 1622 and 1624, after it was destroyed during the Siege of Middelburg (1572–1574). Its furnishings include a 1624 pulpit with a baptismal screen and a reading desk. The chronology runs from the destruction in the late 16th century to reconstruction in the early 17th century; the pulpit adds a dated detail to the building’s history.

Fort Den Haak was built in 1588 to protect the Veerse Gat and lies northeast of Vrouwenpolder on Vrouwenpolderseweg. Parts of its ramparts are still visible in the landscape. While the church’s story focuses on destruction and reconstruction, the fort points to the former defensive role of the Veerse Gat.
