Aagtekerke brings together a historic village church, pasture and farmland, a cycling connection to Walcheren, and an alpaca activity with a specific duration. Local history, rural scenery and activities sit side by side here: from the church building to a one- to two-hour beach walk.

Village Church and Local History

The historic Dorpskerk stands on Dorpsplein. Its tower dates from the 15th century, while the single-aisled nave dates from 1625. The dates refer to different parts of the building and provide two distinct points of reference for the church’s history. A single-aisled nave has one main aisle; the technical term describes the basic layout of the church interior.

During the Eighty Years’ War, the Dorpskerk was badly damaged amid the guerrilla fighting between the Sea Beggars and the Spanish on Walcheren from 1572 to 1574. The building details and the history of the war offer different ways of approaching the church: one focuses on individual parts of the building and their dates, the other on an event that places the church within the conflicts on Walcheren.

Sculptor Rombout Verhulst created a funerary monument in the Dorpskerk for Hendik Thibaut, Isabelle Porrenaer and their daughter Jacoba. Remains of a motte, or motte castle, are preserved at the St.-Jan-ten-Heere site. These historical traces are quite different: one is a named work of art inside the church, the other a fortification.

Landscape and Cycling

Aagtekerke lies among pastureland and farmland. Nearby are the De Manteling nature area and the sea dike at Westkapelle. The landscape around the village thus extends from its agricultural surroundings to a nature area and a sea dike, offering different reasons to go on an outing.

Aagtekerke is also considered a starting point for a cycling tour through Walcheren. This adds a regional perspective to the description of the local landscape: fields shape the surroundings of Aagtekerke, while the cycling connection brings Walcheren into focus. If you are interested in landscapes, you can distinguish between the village’s rural scenery and a bike ride with a regional focus.

Alpaca Activities with Different Focuses

Alpacas Zeelandia in Aagtekerke offers a one- to two-hour alpaca beach walk year-round for people aged ten and over. It passes through the dunes and along the beach between Domburg and Westkapelle. Its stated duration makes the walk easy to plan as a clearly defined activity. It is subject to booking and weather conditions.

Alpacas Zeelandia also offers an alpaca high tea year-round for people aged ten and over. It includes unlimited coffee and tea, as well as savory and sweet foods, including authentic Zeeuwse bolussen. This activity requires a booking. The two activities have different focuses: an outdoor beach walk or a selection of food served with coffee and tea.
