Domburg is Zeeland’s oldest seaside resort. Over the centuries, the town developed from a place of religion and trade into an artists’ village and, eventually, a seaside resort. This gives you several areas to focus on when planning your visit: local history and art, landscapes and routes, or activities on the water.

Architectural history and change

The present-day Badpaviljoen building was constructed in 1888–1889 on the site of the first bathing pavilion, which dated from 1837. The dates refer to two construction phases: 1837 is the date of the first pavilion, while 1888–1889 refers to the present-day building. This helps place the building’s history in context without conflating the two structures.

Molen Weltevreden is a stone Dutch-style windmill dating from 1817. It was also a source of inspiration for numerous painters who worked in Domburg, including Toorop and Mondrian. In addition to its architectural form, the mill therefore has an art-historical dimension through its connection to these artists.

Art and cultural highlights

The Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum Domburg is a museum of classical modern art, with a focus on artists’ colonies in Europe. The museum hosts regularly changing exhibitions, and sculptures can be found in the garden. A clearly defined thematic focus is thus combined with changing exhibitions and art in the garden.

The colorful Mondriaan bench references Piet Mondrian’s iconic style. The Johanneskerk is also one of the subjects of his work: Mondrian drew and painted it several times. If you are interested in art history, you can explore these connections alongside the museum and the history of the mill. The tourist information point is located in the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum, Ooststraat 10a, in Domburg.

Sea, dunes and a range of activities

The nature in and around Domburg ranges from high dune peaks to the open sea. Routes in and around Domburg connect the sea, dunes and natural areas. One specific walking option is the Mantelinge Route, which starts at Strandclub Oaxaca, right by the dunes of Domburg.

Tour de Boer offers a different perspective: this cycling tour passes through the polders around Domburg, where you can discover numerous sustainable businesses. Along the way, you can buy food at various farm shops. The participating businesses and farm shops may change, so check the current route description before setting off. Unlike the Mantelinge walking route, Tour de Boer is a cycling route through polders—two different ways to explore the landscape.

For activities on the water, Surfschool Domburg offers bookable surf lessons at Noordduine beach. The surf school also rents out boards, SUPs, kayaks and wetsuits. This lets you choose between lessons and renting a range of equipment. Domburgsche is the only true links course in the Netherlands, adding a focus on golf to the options.

Plan your journey

Domburg has no railway station, but it does have seven bus stops. As transport information can change, check the latest connections before travelling. For planning your visit, it is also useful to know where the tourist information point is: it is located in the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum at Ooststraat 10a in Domburg.
