Gapinge combines a distinctive village centre with the rural landscape of Walcheren. There are several ways to shape your travel plans: walks and cycle rides, local customs, and architectural and cultural monuments.

Village Character and Landscape

Green-and-white shutters and black-and-white barn doors characterise the farmhouses in Gapinge. The village lies amid the rural landscape of Walcheren. The village itself and the surrounding countryside therefore offer distinct aspects of a stay: one is seen in the houses, the other along paths through fields and over old dykes.

Just outside Gapinge are two protected Vliedbergen. These raised mounds are among the area’s distinctive features, as are the creek ridges visible on a walk along the village boundaries. On the Schellachse Weg in Gapinge stands a Vliedberg that is a motte castle dating from the Late Middle Ages.

On Foot or by Bike

A walk of about 13 kilometres along the boundaries of Gapinge passes through open fields, over old dykes and creek ridges, and along quiet paths. If you plan to do this loop, check the route details before setting out. The approximate distance helps with planning, but on its own does not indicate how long the walk will take.

Cycling offers a longer route: the Vliedbergenroute is 46.1 kilometres long, passes through Gapinge and goes by villages such as Grijpskerke, Mariekerke and Biggekerke. By comparison, the walk, at about 13 kilometres, is considerably shorter. The two routes therefore offer different distances and ways of getting around, without needing to be combined into a single trip.

Customs and Village Life

The villagers organise Ringrijden, a traditional Zeeland folk sport, every year. The Gapingse Dag is also held annually. If you would like to include either event in your stay, check the specific dates before travelling.

In Sjezenrijden in Gapinge, a woman and a man in traditional dress sit in a so-called Sjees. The woman tries to spear the ring, while the man guides the horse along the course at a steady trot. This division of tasks makes the custom easy to picture: the ring and the course are at its heart, while the two participants take on different roles.

Church, Mill and Architectural History

The Torenkerk in Gapinge is a single-nave Late Gothic church with a three-sided chancel and a sacristy. Its tower is partially incorporated into the church building. These features give a clear impression of its architectural form, without reducing the view of the church to the tower alone.

The De Graanhalm mill also has a notable architectural feature: its internal mechanism is still largely original and well preserved. Near the grain mill is an aviary with a chicken coop. Together with the church and the Vliedbergen, these buildings add to the picture of a place whose local character can be read in a variety of buildings and historical forms.
