Several clearly distinct themes come together in Tilligte: engineering history along the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal, grain milling at the Westerveldmolen, the Mariakapel and a rural setting. There is also the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal Route, a riding activity at Manege Meinders, and coffee or tea at Erve Meinders’ Koekhoes. Prioritising can help with your plans: which of these aspects do you want to shape your stay?
Weir on the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal
The Schuivenhuisje, also known as the Dinkelhuisje, is a weir built in 1887 on the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal. A special steel sluice-gate mechanism used the Dinkel to regulate the water level. When the canal was closed to shipping in 1960, the structure lost its function. It was thoroughly restored in 2005.
On the right-hand outer wall, visitors can activate a film inside by placing their palm on it. Before your visit, check whether this feature is currently available.
Windmill and chapel
Just outside Tilligte’s village centre, on Frensdorferweg, stands the Westerveldmolen. This Dutch-style windmill, built in 1865, was fully restored in 1984. A volunteer miller regularly grinds grain into flour there, which can be bought on site. Unlike the Schuivenhuisje, the focus here is on milling grain rather than regulating water levels.
The Mariakapel on the edge of Tilligte was built by volunteers in 2003. It adds another local structure from recent times to the story of the area’s engineering works.
Countryside and cycle route
The area around Tilligte offers plenty of open space, old farmhouses and winding sandy tracks. Nearby is Ottershagen, a protected meadow-bird area. Ottershagen provides a specific point of reference for the landscape, while the farmhouses and sandy tracks describe the character of the surrounding countryside.
For cycling, the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal Route is another option. It largely follows the existing cycle junction network and can be ridden in either direction. The Schuivenhuisje is a way point on the route. Check the latest route details before setting off, as route information can change.
Horse riding, coffee and accommodation
Manege Meinders offers a free trial horse-riding lesson. If you plan to take part, check the booking terms in advance, as they may change.
Visitors can enjoy coffee or tea with something sweet at Erve Meinders’ Koekhoes. If you are planning your visit specifically around this, check what is currently on offer beforehand.
When looking for hotels for a stay in Tilligte, your own priorities are a helpful starting point. Would you mainly like to visit the buildings, plan a bike ride, experience the countryside or take part in a riding activity? Choose accommodation whose location suits these plans, and check the booking terms for each activity.
