Rossum is surrounded by a bocage landscape typical of Twente. Hedgerows, raised fields and old farmhouses shape the opportunities for hiking and cycling. There are also local cultural and religious sites, as well as routes of very different lengths. If you are looking for a hotel in Rossum, you can first consider whether individual walks and local history or a longer hike or cycle tour will shape your stay.

Landscape and routes around Rossum

Rosummermeden, a nature area with opportunities for hiking and cycling, lies northwest of Rossum. There are two possible starting points for walks through the raised-field landscape of Volthe: Partycentrum Hutten or the Rabo de CoCeR cultural centre. A hiking trail also runs through a landscaped area on the southwestern edge of Rossum, in the hamlet of Lemselo. The church tower in Rossum can sometimes be seen from there.

The Roderveld near Oldenzaal offers a different choice of route lengths. Two waymarked circular routes start at the parking area by Het Everloo: one is 1 kilometre long and the other 3.5 kilometres. The nature area includes deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as wet heathland with plants and animals. The former railway line between Oldenzaal and Denekamp is also now a hiking route. This gives you a choice between short circular routes and a hiking route along a former railway line.

Multi-day hike and cycle tour

The Hilligenpad is a seven-day reflective walking route through the landscape of Twente. Its third day leads from Rossum through the Dal van de Mosbeek to Tubbergen. The stage starts at Kanaalweg Noordzijde 1, 7596 Rossum, near the Hunenborg. This section is one specific day’s stage of a longer route, rather than one of the short circular routes in the Roderveld. As route details can change locally, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.

The Hunenborg is a ring-fort dating from around 1050. Its wooded remains consist of a main fort and a scarcely visible outer fort. It is part of the AVAV Natura 2000 area, whose full name is Achter de Voort, Agelerbroek en Voltherbroek. Its habitats include purple moor-grass meadows, bog woodland and small bodies of water.

There is also a specific route description for a longer cycle tour: the Z-Fietsen Route Beuningen en De Lutte is about 39 kilometres long. It starts and ends in Rossum and passes through Beuningen, the Lutterzand and De Lutte. Its approximate length helps distinguish this circular tour from the shorter hiking options; the exact route may change.

Churches and local landmarks

The St. Plechelm Church in Rossum is a cruciform church built from yellow machine-made bricks. Its gabled roof has a ridge that bends inward and is covered with red Roman roof tiles. Near the church entrance is the Marian grotto, a place of worship inaugurated by Pastor H. Thijert in early October 1990. A Calvary monument was erected in Rossum’s cemetery in 1909.

Other notable landmarks lie outside the village: the Landkreuz on Boschweg was erected beside a mighty oak in 1939, about half a kilometre outside Rossum, at the edge of a raised field. A restored Tuffelkeller, a partly underground storage building, stands just outside the village on Everlostraat. Rossum’s Kroezeboom, a rest stop during a cycle tour, is also on Boschweg. These places reveal different aspects of local history and cycling, without needing to be combined into a set route.

Plan your stay to suit you

If you want to make the route the focus, you can assess it by its described length and course; if you want to explore Rossum’s local landmarks, there are several specific historical points of interest. This makes it possible to choose a hotel in Rossum to suit your planned activities without cramming every option into a packed itinerary.
