In Lattrop, the range extends from a church classified as Art Deco to a mill that, after being relocated, grinds grain by hand each week. Walking and cycling routes, along with birdwatching, complement the cultural focus with various outdoor activities.
Church and Mill History
The H.H. Simon and Jude Church in Lattrop is a Roman Catholic cruciform basilica. Joseph Cuypers and Pierre Cuypers Jr. designed the building; it was completed in 1936. The church is classified as a building in the pure Art Deco style. The term “cruciform basilica” describes the building’s form, while Art Deco identifies its style—two different aspects of the architecture of the same building.
The history of the Oortman Mill includes both a change of location and a change of function. It was built in 1779 in Tjamsweer as an oil mill connected to a hulling mill. In 1910, it was moved to Lattrop and rebuilt there as a grain mill. Today, the mill grinds grain by hand each week to make flour for bakers and butchers in Twente. The original oil mill thus became a grain mill after it was rebuilt; these different functions belong to different chapters in its history.
Park, Archive and Jongkind
The park surrounding Huis te Breckelenkamp is a rare and well-preserved example of a Dutch classicist estate. The house dates back to a havezate built on the site of the Tyhuiss in 1572. The park’s design and the early history of the building thus offer two different ways of exploring the history of the estate. Part of its archive is open to everyone. If you are interested in the online materials, check in advance which ones are available.
Lattrop is the birthplace of the painter Johan Barthold Jongkind. The Jongkind Monument stands on the former site of his birthplace and is a small monument in the Saxon style. This distinguishes the painter’s birthplace from the location of the monument: the monument marks the former site of his birthplace.
Walking and Cycling
The 8 km Jongkind Route is a walking route along paved and unpaved paths in the area around Lattrop-Breklenkamp. For cycling, there is a 25 km tour through the Beneden-Dinkeldal, starting at Erfgoed Bossem in Lattrop-Breklenkamp. Another option is the 32 km Jongkind Route, a recreational cycling route through the countryside around Lattrop-Breklenkamp. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider both the activity and the stated distance: an 8 km walk or cycling routes of 25 or 32 km.
Landscape and Nature Watching
Bergvennen & Brecklenkampse Veld in Lattrop-Breklenkamp is a Natura 2000 landscape with semi-open heathland, woodland, small peat lakes and grassland. From a birdwatching screen, visitors can watch birds and ducks at the fens. The Beneden-Dinkeldal follows the course of the Dinkel and includes Ottershagen, a unique meadow bird area. The Ottershagenschöpke birdwatching hut offers a view over the open landscape of the Beneden-Dinkeldal.
Canoeing on the Dinkel is possible outside the breeding season with a permit. The season and the permit are specific conditions for this activity.
Starry Skies
Sterrenwacht Cosmos offers another kind of observing experience: in clear weather, visitors can look through large telescopes there. Unlike the routes and birdwatching locations, this option explicitly depends on the weather.
