Ootmarsum can be explored through very different traces: stately domestic life at Drostenhuis, the art of Ton Schulten and an open-air museum on the edge of the historic town. There is also the story of a stone grain mill and Springendal, near Ootmarsum. The cultural attractions tell stories of houses, art and everyday life; at Springendal, the focus is on water and landscape.

Art and domestic life across different periods

Drostenhuis was originally a town farm and was converted into a manor house around 1750. Its rooms contain antique furniture from the early 19th century, paintings and household objects that illustrate the lives of the affluent population. Two historical periods are represented side by side: the house’s conversion in the 18th century and its furnishings from the following century.

The Ton Schulten Museum takes a different approach. Paintings and documentaries offer an introduction to the painter’s world, thoughts, perspective and artistic exploration. His works are on permanent display. There is also a separate themed gallery for changing exhibitions by national and international guest artists. The contrast between Schulten’s permanent display and the changing guest exhibitions distinguishes the two parts of the museum. Groups can reserve a guided tour.

Museums to explore and take part in

Openluchtmuseum Ootmarsum is located on the edge of the historic town. It showcases authentic buildings, each with its own furnishings and household objects. This makes for a different kind of visit than an exhibition focused mainly on paintings or films: here, the buildings and their individual furnishings shape the museum experience.

At Schoolmuseum Ootmarsum, groups can take a lesson in a 17th-century classroom. Accessibility may also be important when planning your visit: the museum is wheelchair accessible, has a wheelchair-accessible toilet and an elevator. If you rely on these facilities, confirm the current information before your visit. Schoolmuseum and the Ton Schulten Museum offer different formats for groups: a lesson in the historic classroom at the former, and a guided tour that can be reserved at the latter.

Mill and monument

The Church of St. Simon and St. Jude is a Rijksmonument (national heritage site), number 31756. Molen van Oude Hengel is a stone grain mill in Ootmarsum, on the edge of the Ageleres. Its current stone structure was built in 1872, after the wooden mill structure burned down in 1866.

The mill’s later use is also part of its history: from 1911 to 2010, it was owned by the Oude Hengel family, along with a bakery, shop, café and sawmill. The construction history and family business represent different periods: first the rebuilding after the fire, then the long period when the mill and other businesses were part of the family’s story.

Springendal and cycling route

Springendal is near Ootmarsum. There, spring water feeds three ponds, which in turn supply the Springendalsebeek. The landscape includes forests, hills, pastures, small lakes, hay meadows, heathland and historic farmsteads. This natural area offers a different focus from the museums and historic buildings: water and the varied landscape shape its character.

The Springendal Route is listed as a cycling route for Ootmarsum and Denekamp, with options of 43 and 53 kilometres. These two distances offer a choice of route length without specifying a particular journey time. Check the latest route information before setting off.
