A stay in Saasveld can be tailored to different interests: birdwatching and short walks go hand in hand with local history. At Molenven, there is a viewing shelter and the option of a short circular walk; a walk through ’t Gravenbos can begin near Saasveld church. The Sint Plechelmus Church and its garden are reminders of the former Saterslot.
Nature watching and short walks
On the northern shore of Molenven, a viewing shelter offers a view across the water. Birds found there include little grebes, tufted ducks, great crested grebes, mallards, great spotted woodpeckers, black woodpeckers and ravens. The birdlife gives the viewpoint a clear focus on observation; Molenven is also suitable for a short circular walk. You can choose between birdwatching by the water and a walk on foot.
A short circular walk through ’t Gravenbos can begin near Saasveld church. You can park your car in the square in front of the primary school near the church. If you would like to plan a hiking or cycling tour rather than a single walk, you can use the junction network.
Church and local history
The Sint Plechelmus Church in Saasveld and its garden are remnants of the former Saterslot castle. Jan Schoenaker, a glazier and painter from Oldenzaal, created all the stained-glass windows in St Plechelmus Church. Having a single artist create them makes the windows a unified artistic theme and distinguishes this aspect from the castle’s history. The first Saasveldse Cultuur Historische Optocht took place in 1926 to mark the opening of today’s Plechelmus Church. The Soaseler Möl was built in 1870. These dates mark different historical points of reference: the construction of the mill and the event held to mark the opening of today’s church.
Walking, cycling and landscapes
Saasveld lies in the cultural landscape characteristic of Twente, shaped by a variety of landscapes. There are several walking and cycling routes in Saasveld. The route network includes 26 walking routes and five starting points for routes of different lengths and day trips in the region. Since the range of routes may change, check the current selection before making specific plans. A short walk around Molenven or through ’t Gravenbos is a different choice for the day than a regional day trip: the short options keep the focus on a walk, while the starting points offer routes of different lengths. You can also plan a cycling tour using the junction network. The number of routes and the number of starting points answer different questions: the 26 walking routes show the available selection, while the five starting points provide options for different route lengths and regional day trips. When planning, it is therefore worth considering the choice of route and the possible starting point separately.
