Abbey and Mining History
Rolduc Abbey is the largest abbey in the Benelux countries and is one of the 100 most significant monuments in the Netherlands. A guided historical tour of the monastery complex lasts 1.5 hours. Check tour availability before your trip. At the Rolduc complex, you can also sample abbey beer and take a tour of the brewing and tasting room with a brewer. For this experience too, you should check availability and make a reservation in advance.
Another historical landmark is Shaft Nulland. The shaft belonged to the former Domaniale Mine, considered the oldest coal mine in the Netherlands. On display are an original winding cage, or lift, a mine bicycle, machinery, and objects and photographs from the mining era. Tours with former miners are available by appointment. Since 1957, D'r Joep, the national miners' monument, has stood in Kerkrade's market square.
Museums and Leisure Activities
The Discovery Museum is the largest science and technology museum in the southern Netherlands. Its focus is on the earth, science, technology and design. Kerkrade brings together different aspects of discovery: the industrial heritage of Shaft Nulland and a museum offering a broad perspective on knowledge and design.
LeisureDome offers, among other things, a cinema, bowling alley, trampoline park, indoor playground, escape rooms and an arcade. Before your trip, check which individual activities are available.
Green Spaces and Walking Trails
In the Anstel Valley, you can walk or cycle through forests, along streams and beside the shore of the Cranenweyer reservoir. The monumental Erenstein Castle is also located in the Anstel Valley. The Kerkrade Botanical Garden is the only botanical garden in the province of Limburg; more than 3,000 different plants grow there. In the Worm Valley, you can walk alongside the meandering border river Worm. You can also walk the Worm Valley Water Trail independently, without a guide; a route is available to download. Municipal information published in October 2025 puts the Kerkrader Knopen-Lopen network at about 65 kilometres of signposted walking trails. As the network may grow, it is worth checking the latest route details before setting out.
A special option is the 5-kilometre Kirchroa op wiele mobility route. It was designed specifically for wheelchair users, (Duo) mobility scooters and (Duo) bicycles, and is also suitable for walkers. Kerkrade's trails therefore differ not only in their scenery, but also in how they are designed.
Routes and Practical Information
The Archeologische fietstocht Kerkrade is 17.7 kilometres long, starts and ends at Rolduc Abbey, and follows the cycle junction network. The Van abdij tot mijnsteenberg – rondje 2 route is 10.5 kilometres long and starts at the Kerkrade Botanical Garden. The distance and starting point offer concrete reference points for planning your route. Check the latest route file for the Archeologische fietstocht before setting off. The Parkstadroute also passes through Kerkrade, deliberately taking a route through the town centre. As diversions may occur, check the latest route information before you start.
For visits to GaiaZOO, there is a bus stop called “GaiaZOO”; from there, visitors walk past the Tower of Gaia to the entrance plaza. The zoo has its own car park and ten charging stations for electric vehicles.
