The long-distance Pieterpad trail runs through the municipality of Echt-Susteren and attracts many hikers every year. There are also local Ommetjes for shorter walks: they are between 4 and 8 kilometres long and pass through town centres as well as the municipality’s outlying areas. This lets you choose between a long-distance trail and shorter routes, without suggesting that they offer the same hiking experience.

Walk Along Different Types of Trails

The Knopen Lopen walking network comprises 285 kilometres of signposted trails and 276 junctions. The network includes paved and unpaved paths, as well as so-called Laarzenpaden (boot paths). The paved paths are suitable at least for wheelchairs and pushchairs. As conditions on the paths can vary locally, check the local conditions before setting out.

Getting there is straightforward too: the municipality of Echt-Susteren is served by the A73 and A2 motorways. When choosing your activities, it is more useful to distinguish between the walking options than to think of the network as one uniform whole: the Pieterpad runs through the municipality, while the Ommetjes connect town centres and outlying areas on routes of 4 to 8 kilometres.

Architectural History and Cultural Heritage

The Sint-Amelbergabasiliek in Susteren was built in the mid-11th century in the late Ottonian style and is considered the oldest basilica in the Netherlands. A route through the south of Susteren passes the basilica, goes through the IJzerenbos with its wood anemones, and runs right along the German border. In this way, the town’s architectural history is part of a route that also takes in woodland and border landscapes.

The Cultuurhuis Edith Stein houses Stichting Dr. Edith Stein, the Museum van de Vrouw and the Historisch Informatie Punt of the local history society heemkundekring Echterlandj. Since 2003, the Museum van de Vrouw has presented changing exhibitions focused on women and offered artists from Echt and the surrounding area opportunities to exhibit their work. If you plan your visit around the exhibition programme, check the current dates.

Echt also has an industrial history: a significant ceramics industry developed there in the second half of the 19th century, with roof tiles as its most important product. The former De Valk roof-tile factory was given a new purpose as De Pannenfabriek. In the restored factory halls, which are protected as a Rijksmonument (listed national heritage site), food and drink, history, culture and socialising come together.

Other historic sites tell stories from different periods. Kazemat IJsstraat was built in 1939 and used to defend the eastern border on 10 May 1940. The present-day Kasteel Eyckholt dates from the mid-18th century; its tower is considerably older, dating from the 16th century.

Landscape and Archaeological Traces

The het Marissen nature area contains fens formed at the end of the Ice Age, including Kranenbroek. These shallow, elongated bodies of water, formed by wind-blown sand, provide a special habitat for plants and animals. Kranenbroek is suitable for ice skating in winter; whether conditions are right depends on the weather.

The six-kilometre-long Middelsgraaf follows a winding course; its widened banks protect the surrounding area from flooding. Archaeological finds at the Middelsgraaf include a stone hammer axe from the Bronze Age, dated to 2000–800 BC, and part of a Celtic neck ring dating from 400–50 BC. The landscape and the finds represent two different ways of looking at the area’s history: as a waterway with a protective function and as a place bearing traces of early human activity.

Cross-Border Cycling

Route vol Verwondering comprises three cycling routes through the Zuid-Limburgse Grensmaasvallei, the Selfkant in Germany and Maaseik in Belgium. Nature, wide-open views and cultural heritage are among the routes’ themes. A bike trip can also take you from Belgium to Germany and back to the Netherlands in a single day. You can also explore the municipality’s religious sites by bike.

Local Produce and Culinary Experiences

Abdij Lilbosch was founded in 1883 as a Cistercian abbey. The monks farm their own fields, grow vegetables and fruit, and keep bees. The abbey is considered the birthplace of Livar, the Limburg monastery pig. Meat from these pigs and other artisan products are available at the abbey shop next to the abbey; check availability before your visit.

Kookatelier Wils offers cooking workshops where participants prepare dishes from, for example, Italian, Thai or Japanese cuisine, and then take home a recipe booklet. Check the workshop programme before your trip. Bie Aloïs combines a café, a museum, a Proeflokaal (tasting room) and a cooking studio. It offers guided tours, tastings of Brand speciality beers, meals and special dinners; check in advance what is available for your travel dates. Kasteel Eyckholt, a historic castle, also offers culinary experiences; check availability before visiting.
