Kerkrade brings together gardens and nature, mining history, historic buildings and a recurring music event. When planning your stay, it helps to start with one distinction: is there a specific date that will determine your trip, or would you rather organise your days around interests such as gardens, hiking and wildlife? Schacht Nulland and the Miljoenenlijn have specific scheduling constraints; the Wereld Muziek Concours takes place every four years.

Nature, gardens, hiking trails and wildlife

The Botanical Garden Kerkrade is a state-protected monument. Its special features include a large pond with insect-eating plants, a large rock garden and a significant conifer collection in the arboretum. For a different nature experience, try the 9.3 km “Langs landgoederen en meer – Kerkrade” hiking route: it passes through the Anstel Valley and offers views of the Cranenweyer, the Netherlands’ only reservoir. This gives you a clear choice between a botanical collection and a specifically named hiking route through a valley.

The Worm Valley near Kerkrade is a cross-border nature area along the River Worm, where kingfishers and beavers are often spotted. GaiaZOO in Kerkrade offers visitors more than 150 different animal species. The two destinations offer different experiences: the Worm Valley is about observing wildlife in a river landscape, while the zoo showcases a variety of animal species. So, depending on your interests, you can choose between nature watching in the river area and seeing a wide range of animal species at the zoo.

History and culture

Schacht Nulland is open on Wednesdays from 09:00 to 12:00 and by appointment. Former miners guide visitors through the shaft building. If you would like to visit outside Wednesday mornings, arrange your visit in advance.

Kasteel Erenstein in Kerkrade was built in the 14th century. Rolduc Abbey is the largest abbey in the Benelux. The Wereld Muziek Concours brings thousands of musicians to Kerkrade every four years. If the competition is important to your stay, check its dates before travelling. The historic buildings offer different highlights: Kasteel Erenstein dates from the 14th century, while Rolduc is the largest abbey in the Benelux.

Planning trips and your stay

The Miljoenenlijn runs steam trains and historic diesel trains between Schin op Geul and Kerkrade at set times. Operating days and timetables may change, so check the timetable if the train ride is part of your plans. This lets you treat the journey as a scheduled activity in its own right, rather than assuming trains depart at any time.

If a visit to one of the scheduled attractions is the main reason for your trip, check its date first. Then you can prioritise your other interests—gardens, hiking or wildlife—and decide how many nights to stay accordingly.
